What is it?

It was a nice day off with Katie and Jersey. We took a ride in the box on Game Creek. Katie's favorite water thus far. I'd done a mapquest search of the creek and found a shallow offshute of the main creek. I decided to explore it and found that I could navigate it to the back and found a nice open area for an early season Woodie hunt ....I hope! Anyway, as we rounded a bend I noticed some movement ahead and realized it was a hatchling in the lillypads. I got closer and it started to swim towards us. I killed the motor and it was chirping at us. BTW .... Jersey was going nuts trying to get at it. I took a few pics. I think it's a Canada gosslin, but really don't know. Cute little bugger. Also included a few pics of Jersey Girl. She's going to be 12 wks on friday. She's getting a little bigger and a whole lot smarter everyday. I joined some locals that train their dogs and have high hopes of having a fine hunting companion in the near future. Takin it day by day.

That was my guess too Jay. The geese pups here are almost big enough to eat. Good looking little lady you have there and I see she likes the bow....That was Colby's spot from sitting still to 29mph.

with one stone. Think about it....

Man, I'm waiting for an email tonight and I'm just manning the board here. Like the old days....bring it on. I have a photo for everything.

Where'd you wax that winged devil?

I've had an itchy trigger finger here in MD for quite some time, but just don't want to get the ticket.

Thankfully the DNR has been quietly taking care of MD's population, much to the chagrin of the GREEN WEEENIES.

CB .22s and egg shaking have worked wonders.

I didn't even consider a swan. Go figure! I thought it was odd that no big birds were around this little one. Momma must have heard us coming and got scarce. I didn't realize that swans are a problem to habitat. How so?

Actually, I am surprised you could get that close to it without Momma or Papa coming out to open a can a whupass on you. Around here, they knock people off jetskis that get too close to the nest...that's the ONLY reason I like them. The ones on our lake will challenge if getting too close to the young. Snapping Turtles get a bunch of them.

Dave...weren't you payin' attention a few years ago when I posted my weekly swan reports? A few individuals from Indiana (Corey, myself, Rob Harris etc) had nuisance animal depredation permits. I was able to kill 17 under mine before the state stopped it due to one dumbass that left like 10 of them float on Webster Lake on a nice sunny Saturday in May...in front of a bunch of people. It became a political mess so now the DNR employees "quietly" shoot them with rifles and poison them instead. I used decoys and hunted them traditionally and I was amazed at how quickly they got smart. Usually it only took one hunt before they acted like well hunted Canadas. I relied on their territorial instincts after the initial stupidity factor wore off. I've posted a ton of photos the biggest one was over 32lbs.

Jay-

I'm lucky to remember my phone number some days. I know it's sad....

...In all honesty I do sorta remember something like that.

As far as Mutes being a burden to habitat. I've read or been told that they average eating 3+lbs of vegetation a day and the population was around 4000 at one time.

Larry Hindman from the DNR wrote this article with some info about them.

IMO invasive species of any kind should be removed from the eco-system. Unfortunately in MD we have too many mindless liberals that think they're pretty.

But the DNR has done a GREAT job quietly removing the problem.

The permit required "disposal" of the animal within 24 hours which meant you weren't supposed to eat it or give it to a taxidermist so right away they suggested I either burn them, burry them or throw them in a dumpster. Gotta love the beauracrazy! But despite the rules, I did try to eat a few and they were inedible in my opinion. The odor of the meat made my stomach turn. I would suggest that this was dietary and specific to where I was hunting them. They don't have huge flight muscles...very streamlined and flat.
