What's on your WORK BENCH ? - OCTOBER 2020

I have no experience with Johnson paste wax, so I will not advise.

Have experience with Finish Feeder (no longer made), or just a bit of Bri Wax. Apply using proper gloves.


Also some oil paint can produce a fine sheen, from the heat of your hands, and a linen, or soft canvas rag.

Some of the old time carvers used warm bare hands, and the oil on their skin.

Others used oil, or wax on their warm hands (no cloth). This I WOULD NOT advise unless the product is safe for use on bare hands.


I do believe that Jode Hillman uses mineral oil. You can ask him.


One thing that I do advise. That you allow the oil paint to cure very well before applying any wax, oil, etc. I found that out the hard way... [:/]


When you get the finish like ya want it, the brush strokes & paint will POP! You gonna like it, and so will the birds.

Hey Paisan,
Apparently, the Goleden Matte has a bit of sheen, because we have not had a flaring problem, wet or dry. Interesting info on the oil on one's skin leaving a bit, though. Perhaps, the more us4e, the more that happens?
As a personal note--I HAVe used SMALL amounts of JW, without buffing, on parts of decoys that normally ice and produce doilies when it is quite cold, with pretty good results, especially on low head stuff. BE JUDICIOUS

The only critics you have to please are yourself and the ones flying into your spread. Sounds like you are good on both counts.

I agree, it does increase the color saturation (more applications, over time will increase the color saturation, and gunning patina) .

The Decoy appears to be in it's proper element. I really like the photos.

You have now crossed over... Sheen is good.

Pat, nice approach and good idea, you can also grab so local vegetation and drape it over the log to stabilize it from rocking too much.
 
Without the deadline of the Tuckerton show and with the time spent getting my sneakbox in order getting decoys finished is taking a bit longer. Finally finished a few divers and my first ever Old Squaw. Each is hand carved and hollowed Atlantic White cedar, finished with acrylics. One will be bartered for venison. Both of which are pure bullshit, and have been peddled for a helluva longtime.
