(I could not find another October Work Bench - did I miss it?)



Here is a pair of Teal From the Bench of George Williams:






These Model 63 Herter's are for myself. They are the earlier flat-bottomed ones, with the brass hardware.







They have been coated with epoxy + fine sawdust - except the bills and eyes. The bills get a topcoat of Satin Spar Varnish.







My convention for Blacks is to show the speculum on the Hens - but not on the Drakes.






I've got a bunch of duckboat work going on - just no time to post.....

I'm glad you caught the fact nobody started the monthly workbench thread.

So my workbench has been occupied by another machine restoration. This time it is a Newman #60 16" jointer that weighs more than a ton. Even broken down into pieces it is still hard to manage. I've made a lot of progress on it over the past few weeks. The current status is the takedown, paint removal, paint prep, priming, and painting are complete. That's probably 80% of the work so I'm in the home stretch. I did something on this restoration I've not done before, that being I used body filler on the main cast iron parts to remove pits, craters, and other imperfections. The picture below show how things are progressing.

I, too, have a heavier-than-I-can-manage NDR project in the mix. For our Lake Champlain camp I found this mid-80s (1980s) Vermont Castings fireplace insert.






It was all I could do to get it into my '03 Element - should've used my flatbed trailer instead. Turns out it weighs 425 pounds. I made a dolly for it from some Ash and heavy casters. I can manhandle fairly easily with the face off. I need to wait 'til 3 duckboats are completed - so it's a Winter project now.

Great to see the original run amok is still running amok!

I really like that Pintail Vince is it has a lot of character.

Here's a little rig I recently finished up,

And on the bench this month is a pair of green wing teal I am making all the ashes of my retriever Brooke. It's been about six months since she passed and I am just getting able to make them now. It's Always a hard thing to do when it's for one of yours.


Plus a few pictures of the new venture my wife and I have undertaken, some serving boards. I do the rough work and she does the artwork and finish work. A great way to use up a lot of the unique lumber inventory I have accrued over my lifetime.

Pictures are some live edge black cherry, and some genuine American chestnut that I milled.

Sweet sign - but I understand what you mean about doubling the effort. I made this for our camp in 2010. I cannot find a photo of the flip side - but it has just our first names on it.






These three are Model 72 Mallards - the older ones with the flat bottoms and brass. One is from the dozen I bought back in 1968. I will hunt 2 of them tomorrow morning - our opener hereabouts. A Drake and Hen will be tethered to my jerk string.

Just an update. One South Bay - the first of 2 in the queue - is 99% done - but not quite ready to haul to Long Island tomorrow....as I had planned.






I still need to design and build a backrest and a pair of shelves.






And, I had to dash off this Duck Hawk for my Grandson. Susan flew off to Berlin today - to be with him on his 5th birthday. He is fully immersed in Nature nowadays. My daughter will transform him into a Peregrine for Halloween.







He is now beyond the cartoons-only stage - and is developing a discerning eye. I hope my watercolor meets with his approval.

Very nice, as usual. Do you know how many South Bay's were produced? I suspect you've had your eyes and hands on a good percentage of them.

Made it in on the last day! Trying a different paint scheme on some BWT hens.





All are a little different. Ticking on a textured surface is a PITA, dry brushing to effect is much easier.
