What's on your workbench - February

Jode love seeing the calls on instagram.
Do you think the resin changes the sound compared to an all wood piece of the same wood?

I've made one call and it's a little higher pitch than I'd like and just haven't had time to play with making more
 

Thanks Ben. Yes it does change the sound of the call. I find it a little denser than most of the woods I use for bodies. So it tends to deepen the call in my opinion.

Drake Wood Duck decoy, watercolor on cardboard, 8"w x 6 1/2"h

Will migrate to a fellow DU committee member who does way more than his share.


Still unable to carve em, but can still paint em once in awhile.

The deep winter north light, has been good on certain days.

Man I wish I could find more black mineral stain poplar!

Serious trouble for some long beards.


Your saying the poplar is spalted that dark color?

They sound pretty good Vince thanks. The poplar is not spalted , it is some type of mineral staining that occurs in nature. It turns it black, red ,and brown,And purple. It?s very rare and hard to come by but it?s super cool. It has no additional coloring by me, that is the natural color with the clearcoat

[size 5]It's been slow-going on this third bird in a series of deadmount carvings, but a pintail turned out to be a pretty difficult choice to execute.
I'm guessing I have quite a few painting sessions left, and I've also just started on the refinishing and restoration of the carved panel it will be mounted on. This one will take a lot of wall space [smile]

Still looking for interesting items to add to the whole tableau.

I had a dead mount of snows done a few years back. My mom asked why they were "flying down" when she was visiting.
 
Very cool turkey Ben. Canvas decoys have always been intriguing to me, I look forward to seeing it put to use.

Pat's hoodie is fantastic. Saw a post on Facebook aboutnit the other day, really neat looking bird and would love to see it on the water.

Thanks Mark, I'm a wood hoarder (I bet most of us carvers/boat builders are[;)]) so I use whatever fits the bird from marine ply to pine board to cedar scrap...that being said I believe these are both marine ply scrap. This Black Duck I did last night uses cedar salvaged from an old closet lining!

Ain't that the truth!

Your decoys look very good indeed. Your Black Duck has got me looking at my stash of good dark cork, and wondering... Been awhile since I rasped the stick to everything static stuff.
