Did you ever see Andy Stewart's approach ? - he put eye-splices in #72 tarred (twisted) nylon. He used a bent paper clip as a fid. I do remember him making some remark about too much time on his hands.....

I remember the braid and tried it, I got halfway through then tied knots. I am not sure if it was him or somebody else but in addition to the eye splice they used dip in different colors for different length line.
