Where to install the oar locks.

I thought I had found this information before on here but I can not seem to find it.

What is the recommended formula for calculating where to install the oar locks on a boat?

For some reason 18" aft of the halfway point between nose and stern comes to mind but I have not idea if that is correct.

Yes I realize if I am talking about the oar locks that I owe updated pics to the site.

Brandon, I don't think there is a "formula" unless your boat design has fixed seating. Without foxed seats, you need to figure out where your going to need to sit to trim out the boat when she's loaded the way she will be when your rowing. Once you located your butt the oar locks should be roughly centered on your comfortable hand stroke, extend your closed fists, then draw them back to an inch or two in front of your chest, that's what I'm referring to as your comfort stroke. During max effort you will be leaning forward to plant and putting your back into it on the power stroke but for maneuvering and cruising speed being centered on your arm stroke is most comfortable. Height of oarlock is a whole other issue. Best of luck! She's coming out really nice!

Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to outline that for me. The seating will be something that can be moved so I will spend some time figuring out the most reasonable place.

I second what Scott wrote.

On my Zack Taylor Sneakbox, I used the dimensions on the drawings, but find myself shifting around in the boat depending on exactly how it is loaded and how fast I am trying to go.

If you go to the site of one of the custom oar makers, they usually have a formula for deciding length of oars and oar lock locations, but it is just a guide, you'd still need to fine tune it, but at least you'd be close.
