Where'd all the ducks go?

I'm hoping the southern New England, Long Island and Jersey folks are seeing some birds.

After having good numbers of ducks around all season--which for us started in late September--all of a sudden just about all our water seems empty.

This week I've been on Merrymeeting Bay (tidal freshwater), a local lake, and today down in Casco Bay (tidal salt) and there just are not a lot of birds around. My bag this week is a single bufflehead from today.

The weather forecast is for some serious cold and maybe a good dump of snow between now and Wednesday, so I'll go pull the sculler from Merrymeeting before it gets frozen in and get myself prepared for the late-season salt water hunting. Maybe this cold snap will kick some Canadian birds south to us.

Not much down here we saw a few teal yesterday. I want the buffies to show up but divers are few and far between. If we get ice this week it should be insane.

I has been pretty slow and if it wasnt for the scull boat i wouldnt have many birds in the freezer.

Another thing is we have VERY few blacks, we have had good numbers of mallards come through

We hunted the flood yesterday afternoon. Kicked out a few on the way out to our spot. Had two blacks cruise by, missed some buffies and lost a mergie. Copared to last Saturday, it was slow. We're going exploring Wed. Jeff and should have an open seat if you're interested.

It's 10F this morning in the north country. Things are freezing fast and a stiff northwest wind should push our puddle ducks south soon, hopefully to be replaced by divers. Keep a eye to the north!

John, I'd love to come up and hunt your river, but between work, a couple of doctor's appointments, and being the cook for Thanksgiving, my hunting is going to be Friday and Saturday. Let me know if you're interested in getting together one of those days.

By the way, didn't I hear Sugarloaf had opened? Don't you usually put up the shotgun for skis about now?

Heading over to pull the sculling boats from my friend's mooring today. It's 21 degrees and 20 gusting 30 out of the west.
My route up to the launch is all protected river channel, but 2 miles of it still ought to be a fun afternoon. Freezing spray warning, for sure.
