Was thinking about you the other day.

Not ADK Mountains, but my family were visiting family out in Western South Dakota last week. While most 9f the trip was a working vacation for me, we managed a little "fun time". One of these "times", we hiked up to the top of Harney Peak. For those of you who don't know, Harney 0eak is the tallest point between the Rockies, to the West, and the Pyranees Mountains of Europe at around 7240 feet. It was a sweltering 90 degrees on the nearby prairie, it was only about 60 degrees at the summit, with a fairly stuff breeze. Our hike was about 3 1/2 miles each way, with, I believe, about a 1200 foot elevation change. Our son lives out there and has done it many times, but for our first time, it was a blast!

Just thought I'd share...

Wife's family is from South Dakota. Black Hills area is not what anyone would think of when most think of South Dakota. Beautiful part of the country. Nice picture.

Mark, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! The trout fishing around Rapid City is some of the worst in that area, too. We stopped there on the way back from the national meeting of the American Fisheries Society back around 1980, when it was held in West Yellowstone. Yes, beautiful country with a variety of options around Rapid City. We were amazed.

I made it back there twelve years ago with Karen, staying at Custer State Park. Her comment as we were headed back down to the trailhead after making that climb/hike, " I will probably not be able to walk tomorrow, but what I just saw was worth every painful-gonna sleep tonight!"

Jon, did you stop at Sylvan Lake?

Well, it's no wonder I missed this post Jon. You spelled my name wrong...Ha. It's "Y" at the end not "I".

But anyway, Harney Peak looks like an awesome place to check out. Great photo opportunities there too it looks like. 90 degree temps aren't much fun to hike in, glad it cooled off at the summit though. That makes things much more enjoyable.

Speaking of the ADK...I suppose I should write up a little report of our last trip up there. It was a dandy. We finally finished the 46 high peaks and tackled a side helping of the Saddleback Cliffs to make it a bit more memorable for my daughter. Scared the crap out of her. She said she'd rather jump out of an airplane than ascend those cliffs again (She skydives too). I'm glad we were able to make it a memorable finish. Now on to the winter 46 for me and Winter Mountaineering school in late January. Got some big plans for next year...out west!

Thanks for sharing,
Steve
