Who flocks?

Who's the goose flocker in the group? (Please read that carefully before answering)

Has anyone tried one of those flocking kits that make a cheesy old shiny plastic shell decoy into a realistic "ready-to-lay-an-egg" Avery lookalike honker masterpiece?

I just wondered before I go off and do something crazy when the real solution is to just pay for the Greenhead FFD's and be done with it.

Unless you do a REALLY PERFECT job you will be unhappy with the results-eventually. The prep time, the process...in my opinion it's a helluva lot easier to buy them. Plus, the factory jobs are electrostatically done so the flocking sorta stands on end. You can get a machine for that but....yeah just buy them that way.

If you do decide to bite it off then do some serious research. The best jobs I've seen were sandblasted and used epoxy. And they still didn't look as good as the fancy factory jobs. I thought I did a good job and basically mine lasted a season and a half...still functional but frankly they need to be redone.

Get some black felt flocking from a hobby store, a can of black FUSION paint and spray the paint on a bit heavy..then pour the flocking over the wet paint..dabbing it on with a pair of old underpants..cotton ones, not the silk thong ones that don't fit anymore.I don't know whether this will actually work, but it sounds good.

Scott,

If cost isn't an issue, get the factory flocked decoys. If cost is an issue or if you already have decoys, flocking is fairly easy and cheap, but it does take some time and it won't be as good as the factory ones. Plus, i bought a batch of flock that sparkled in the sun..not the look i was going for. had to paint over it, but it's still better than plastic.

flocking is easy, wirebrush the old paint, spray on some adhesion promoter (bulldog in the auto supplies at wal-mart), BRUSH on a heavy coat of oil-based flat black paint, and blow flock on (while paint is wet) with half-filled ketchup bottle. best done outside on calm day..allow to dry for one week before knocking around. and don't inhale the fine particles. you can get kits on e-bay.

to be sure I was reading that correctly....I wasn't. hehehehe

Lee, I am thinking that I can still use the silk thong ones as long as I use the leopard skin print collection...those little daubs of flock won't matter to Lisa...

(I hope)

I bought one of the kits on ebay and it worked well. first clean heads then spray with a flat black, let dry then paint in your white the white flock sucks but a flat white paint looks real good against new black flocking next repaint with black flat. over a large container pour on the flocking covering completely, this is quicker and better then squirt bottles let dry and lightly brush off after a day. if you take your time they will come out good and add some protection to your heads good luck bob

I've always been a cheap flocker, you know that.

Two kids thru college, a wedding for one of them, a wife who has more flockin' shoes then Imelda Marcos...

Yes I AM a cheap flocker but hey...to quote a decoy maker friend of mine who makes boats and sells model airplanes

"I just don't like to pay retail..."

Wow, that's a pretty vague description. How would anybody be able to even venture a "wag" on who that might be. :O I think everyone still wonders......"he's got a friend.....whodathunk" Bwaaaaaaaaaa

Flocking......been there....done that....will buy flocked birds the next go around. It's not hard but if you want to kill sometime or have the peace and quite away from the wife , then flock till you drop. Keep the kids out of it though. Pain the the backside to clean up. My 2 cents worth since the decoys are put up until the Resident bird season next Sept.
