Who has a rig of these?

Sure wish I'd bought all I could when they were still making them. Tom Tschabold had a bunch of the bodies and I have a few of his and absolutley love how they look on the water, and the fact they have a slimmer profile making them store with less vertical space. His stock is depleted. It's almost a crime Cabelas bought the company, screwed up the recipe, and then promptly dropped them.

Isn't that what Cabelas does? They buy someone, quality goes down, prices go up, sales go down, doors get shut. It happened to Herters anyway. I think that I read somewhere that they had bought Bigfoot. I hope the story doesn't repeat.

I still have some of the Restle Decoys that I got from Carl Hescheryl. Carl was an outstanding fella. We looked at buying his company before we bought the Davis Decoy Company (and then completely reorganized as the E. Allen). Carl wanted $100,000 for the company and that was way, way, way more than it was worth. But, Herters bought it anyhow and ran it into the ground. Cabelas bought out Herters and the Restle Decoy is......basically.....gone. A real shame.

He found a layout for sale on ebay and bought it. the seller said he had some decoys that he could just have as part of the deal as well. Apparently the seller had gotten completely out of waterfowling.

My buddy made arrangments to pick up the boat, the gentlmen could not be there but told him to just load up the boat and take all the decoys out of the shed.

All teh decoys consisted of 4 doz. Restles in near perfect condition mixed cans and bluebills. My friend was concerned that maybe he was only to take a few but a quick call to teh seller confirmed he wanted them ALL gone.

I must not be living right or something, because that crap NEVER happens to me.

I did get a pair of the cans though for my little DU dinner in May. Anybody want to make an opening bid??? Hhhehee.

I have a doz and a half of the Cans. I am looking to make room in my rafters this off season. If someone has some interest email me and we can talk about a price.
They were bought from herters in the mid 90's.

Hey Lou,

Do you know what is going on with Herter's now. I did buy 2 cases of Herter's #63 buffleheads decoys about a month ago from Cabelas. I think they were half price, so I couldn't pass it up. They had some pretty big sales on their Herter's stuff and they said that they couldn't backorder so I don't know if these are now discontinued.

Brian,
You are lucky "in love" and have a great wife. That used up ALL your luck on finding any deals. Though, you did get a great deal on a Cow Decoy. ;) Unfortunately, cows are not "in season" during the hunting season. Hmmm, maybe it's time to repost the cow rebuild pics, just to remind you how "lucky" you are.

Mike,
Not totally sure what's going on with Herters. Cabelas bought them but there has been very little to no activity with the Herters by Cabelas.
I had a fella from Tenn. call me yesterday looking for some Herters Goose heads but the only thing Cabelas had were GE heads at $.85 each. I sent the fella to Tom Tschabold to see if Tom might have any or could direct him to somebody who would.
Guess that's about the sum total of what I know. You now know as much as I know. Wait, I just forgot something......now you know MORE than I know. ;)

Eric, What is the big deal with restle? I sold mine and was glad to get rid of them.I found that they dented easily, would not self-right,the original plastic heads broke easily at the stem.Tom Tschabold at Toledo Decoys builds a far better bird.Bill.

Bill

The ones I have were given the Tschabold treatment - burlap and indestructable head. Maybe that is why I like them so much. If I found more bodies I'd send them to Tom for his touch. The puddler profile is just perfect from above and the slightly thinner body makes them stow efficiently.

My original rig from the mid 70's were all Restles. My brother has all mine plus all his and loves them.

Putting two heavy coats of latex paint over the original coating makes these birds tough as iron. Replacing the heads is a must if they are broke or not. Lou's E. Allen heads look far better and are mush stronger. As far as self righting, if the waves are strong enough to flip decoys of this size...leave the decoys and run for your life!

Sorry, I didn't like them, Had some lifesize and super size Black Ducks, sold them off. You can get the same effect with old Herters foam jobs, and add texture to the paint.

Bought 1 dzn Mallards and 1dzn Blacks in the early 80's, repainted them last year for the 1st time. Great decoys, they look great in the water.
