2006 bird...

Question from a rookie gobbler hunter...when does the "season" open for turkeys? Just curious, and some great pictures!

Zach

Earliest season is South Florida....

March 7 or somewhere really close to there...

March 15 sees the season in Florida and S.C. and some other areas open.....

From that date the Southern States open first and close somewhere from 30 to 45 days later, (on average)....

Washington and Oregon open April 15 and close May 30.....by that time most other States are either closed or the breedig cycle is so far advanced that the Tom's are already gathering back into bachelor groups and not responding well to calls....except to gobble and walk off.....

Maine closes last....first weekend in June....because of that I have long wanted to go to Maine and kill a Tom there in June.....WHY...because long ago, in a glaxay far far away the Dove season in Texas used to open the last week of August.....I hunted that season several times......a Trukey in June would mean that I had legally killed a Game Bird in every month but July........ahhhhh gotta love a Bucket List.....

Man great pictures. Love the scenery Steve. And Jay, that picture of you with the tail all fanned out is awesome. I've never turkey hunted but this kinda makes me want to give it a try.

and slap those tree hugging, bunny kissin, Nature Conservancy and Sierra Club stickers over the REAL MAN DU/DELTA decals......time for some "what kind of bird is that", "I've never seen that in the woods", "why didn't you kill it", pictures.....

You do know that you can do Turkeys out here on a long weekend?

A nice cinammon phase Black Bear cooling off .... It was Bear season and Mike did have a tag but we were on quads that day and it seemed a shame not to wait till we had a tailgate to pose him on....

California Poppies and Lupine

Acorn Woodpecker loading one of his larders....this was shot in the Spring which is unusal since typically by this time all the acorns are gone. Last year was the first year I've ever seen when the ground under the Oaks was still littered with acorns.....all the furry little bunnies and cuddly little animals were happy and fat....

Loadinup.jpg

Except for this guy....Blacktail skull taken from a Lion Kill...the Lion was happy I'm sure to eat the acorn fattened Deer...the Deer was less happy I'm sure.....I'm working on making those nasty predators into vegans but its a tough job.....

Sorry for the non-game species and the lack of blood in the attached pictures but I was wearing my pink Camo Croc's and drinking Mango-Peach Juice when I picked em for posting.........

Steve,
no picture of a pistol grip stock 12 ga. blaster with red dot is going to ease any of the members concerns about your manhood now that you have a full page of flowers and birdies posted in one spot.
I am beginning to think you may have spent too many hours in front of the TV lying on your front when the doctor told your wife you had to for your eye. Are you sure you didn't spend the whole time watching Martha Stewart and Opra with a dose of Phill Donahue reruns thrown in?

Tod, Since I'm not wearing birkenstocks and drinking mango juice here you go.

I'll post this one also just to make Sutton drool a little more,,,, (than normal).

He wants to take her out this year for her second bird,,,, yeah right...

Only the swim suit models get to hunt with me.

there's better ones than that....of the bird of course......

And besides I'd rather share the blind with one, or both, of the Duncan girls.....

This is serious business! All the hillbillies says the turkeys are eating the quail. In fact I got permission on a farm that owned and leased 10 thousand acres! Tons of good hunting but there was one stipulation...I had to kill every turkey I saw including hens or I was kicked off. I walked away dejected but figured there was a lesson in that incident. To kill big turkeys you need to think like big turkeys.......SO THAT'S WHAT I DID!!

of rotted wood does not qualify as a "limb hanger".....

interesting Center Fold layout on the full bird.....where the one with him on his side with one knee in the air...you take that one for Play Tom?

Steve

That's what you said the first time I posted that a few years ago. He'd have hung just fine but I didn't have any limbs of sufficient structural integrity handy...the field in the background with the treeline was off the property I had permission on. I know he woulda!

Yeah...I always liked that one with the leg kicked out.

But Bob, did you see the length of his choke tube?!? That outta ease any concerns.

That is okay on the Mango-peach juice, it was all down hill after I saw you drink an orange creamer.

Those are some impressive pics there, the poppies and lupine are almost unbelievable. You are right, I do need to get after some turkie out west and I need to make it happen. Absolutely amazing stuff there, I love it.

Hey Jay, great turkey pics! If you measure to the front of the leg, I think you can get those spurs to 2".
