Who hunts open water with a big boat?

Phil, how do you keep from banging the decoys around with your set up? I envision a decoy on the floor while you place one, and another 1 or two off the blind or hull while you are retrieving them. Likewise, how do you deploy then so far from the water? I use slotted bags, and set them on the rear deck of my BBSB. Even as close as the bag is to the water, I can bang the decoys off the hull if not focused.

I've hunted many times out of a big boat/open water. A trick I learned that works fairly well- think "crossing shots". Put the decoys out with the wind at your side so when the come into the decoys, you're off to the side, not directly in front. I'm convinced it makes a difference.

Jon

Took me years to figure that one out Jon.Great tip

How? I guess I cant answer that. I have curtains on the open side... I have never had decoy try to migrate... at least not with the force of the highway or what Michigan has given....
But... never have they bounced or fallen off the shelf...

How do you play them out from the shelves when you deploy the long lines? Seems like you are moving down the cockpit? Do you set them off the gunnels and not off the bow or stern? Does it take 2 to deploy and store? Having a hard time visualizing the process.

I rarely if ever hunt this boat alone...

The blocks are stored in order.... but the are taken out of storage and set on the gunnels... (or top of the decking)...then cast off in order, after the anchor is cast. Again... layout hunting or open water hunting with longlines is seldom a 1 man game.

Gotcha.... I see how that works. Thanks for the explanation. Nice way keep them organized and off the floor. I have a big hull that needs a plan. Not sure if this will be a tender or a camper, but likely both. A few more years for the plan to ferment before I start on it anyway.

thank you for the pics! Looks like what I'd like to do, seperating my six or so LL's into compartments. I do often hunt alone, unlike many of you. must be my winning personality.

I typically hunt alone as well... unless layout hunting... I could be my personality... or ... too many idiots... LOL
