Why does it cost so much to ship UPS?

I ordered two Invisalounge seats from Cabela's. Both came in boxes like this. I couldn't help but marvel at the "common sense" approach to packaging. I could have built a really nice blind out of either of these boxes! This is classic.

So Cabela's has outsourced their shipping to Amazon now? Amazon would consider that outer box just big enough for a twin pack of Sharpie markers.

A couple of weeks ago I ordered two bucket seats for my duckboat and they were individually boxed for shipping, then put inside a box that was big enough for my four year old to make a fort out of.

Shipping does get nuts and it's not necessarily the fault of the supplier you bought from. I've found that I can ship a gallon of paint for very, very, very close to the same cost as shipping a 1/2 pint. That's a bit nuts. You have the initial "cost to ship" plus residential fee, fuel surcharge and anything else they want to tag on. That doesn't even take into account cost of the box, packing material and labor required to pack and process since nobody works for nothing. Shipping cost are one of our biggest expenses and isn't always covered with charges.
I don't see it getting much better or easier.

It drives me crazy too.

The thing of it is; the actuall box the seat was in was more than adaquate to ship the seat.

When I box things correctly and try to ship, it is still expensive. I try not to post things that might be considered political on this site, but UPS has union workers. That is why it cost so much. It's not really political, just the way it is.

Unions built this country. Don't forget it. Would you rather have illegal aliens delivering your packages ? You might as well, since they pay no taxes and we're all paying for their "free" medical care.

Worse than illegal aliens, how about county employees - hah ahahaha

Howard,

Mine came in the Momarsh box only. That is weird that they'd ship like that. Different warehouse and different packers I guess.

I've always liked that "free shipping"...though, it still needs to be paid for one way or another.

I was just thinking about this "boxing" last night. I box and ship Radio Control Model Airplanes all over the Country and always use Greyhound Package Express and it works great and reasonable priced, even for large packages. There have been times that I've made a much wider/taller box and put the wing at a diagonal (much like the picture at the beginning of the thread) and it can make a huge difference in the cost of shipping since GPX primarily looks at the maximum LENGTH of the package (along with weight) in order to determine cost. If I make the box the length of the wing, I will pay more than a bigger box with the wing at a diagonal.

I'll stir the pot: The percentage of workers belonging to unions peaked in the late 1950s at under 35%. So how about the other 65% of workers, I kinda think the numbers indicate that they helped build the majority of this country.

I have found parcel post with the USPS to be cheaper for smaller packages.

Unions were responsible for building the "real" cities like NYC...the financial capital of the world.

Well if I didn't already have a reason to dislike unions that could do it. :)

Damn, that is one hell of a serious insult of the majority of the workers in this country.

I guess that means that all the steel, airplanes, rockets, ships, cars, clothing, wood products, paper, building materials and all the other products made/produced by all the hard working non-union workers in right to work states like Alabama just dont mean shit in the "real" economy.

I cant tell you enough about that company for shipping,,,stuff is always damaged when it arrives,,,if i get something i always ask for it to be shipped regular mail.....
