Wing Survey

After 21 years I finally got selected for a wing survey next season. Yeah!!

It's a shame they only let you do it three? years in a row. I was happy to send them in but I reached the maximum consecutive years apparently.

I was chosen for 3 years in a row and then last year I was requested to send in an itemized list of harvested birds in only one state.. (not my state of residence) Today, I got a letter requesting me to do the wing survey again for this coming season again. How many times can you get picked?

I got the request too. If this upcoming season is anything like last season, they are gonna be getting LOTS of mail from me. Lol

Congratulations to you, Carl, for being picked for the wing survey. I, too, received the same letter from the Fish and Wildlife Service asking if I would care to participate. The letter has already been checked for "yes, I will". Sometime this afternoon when it is about 102F in the shade, I will drive to town to mail the letter. Hey, remember just one thing, the days are now getting shorter! Duck season is just around the corner---so to speak! Now all I have to do is wait and see with my own eyes what water flowing in the Rio Grande (might look like). Where we live which is about 85 miles south of Albuquerque, the river has dried up. That happened back on April 4th and it has flat lined it ever since. For some who believe, it is unprecedented.

Its part of the annual hunter survey program.
Hunters are randomly selected from the HIP data to do annual reports of days hunted and the number of birds harvested.
Then a sub-set of them are asked to collect wings a/o tail feathers from all the ducks and geese they harvest. You send in the wings/feathers and then they get sorted by species, sex and adult/sub-adult.
Just like HIP, band collections, boat ramp surveys and the annual hunter reports, they help USFWS and Flyway councils estimate harvest and population age structure.

Last year was my first year of the wing survey. I'm happy to do it if it results in a more informed management plan. It was also nice to get the information back. Looking forward to doing it again next year.
