Winter Gloves

Might be extreme but I think I normally carry around 5 or 6 pairs. Two pair fleece, two pair fingerless fleece fishing gloves, and at least one pair of thinsulate gloves....

I and everybody I hunt with have a pair of Atlas 495's same as the 490's except the liners on the 495's are removable for drying. I've had mine for a minimum of 5 years and will have them for at least another few years. No leaks, cracks or worn spots. Truely the best pair of gloves I have ever had for duck hunting or other work involving water.

2nd that. Last year in Maine was the first time I had seen them. Only pair of gloves I have found that dont leak and keep me warm. AFter 5 yeras of cussing at neoprne gloves that rip as soon as the ice hit it was a relief.

I hate trying to call and shoot with gloves on, so I had my wife make me a fleece handwarmer that clips to the D-rings on my waders, it's heavyweight fleece with a pocket on the inside for a chemical handwarmer. It keeps my hands warm enough that I don't wear gloves when actually hunting, so far I've used it in temps around 10 degrees and it's been great. It's really nice for calling and shooting to not have to wear gloves! I have some heavy thinsulate gloves for driving the boat and for picking up decoys I use a pair of Wells Lamont PVC ranch gloves with an old pair of wool gloves stuffed into them, so far it's cheap and works great!

Thanks for all the help guys - i should hav mentioned that I have a pair of neoprene decoy gloves already and was looking for a glove that will keep my hands warm in the "down time" before sunrise and before ducks start moving in...

I will definately look into some of these, thanks!

Atlas 495's... the 490's are a pain to get dry, bring 2 pair with the liners, you can also use the military wool liners in them and just use them for shooting as long as you keep them dry.
All the neoprene/goretex "waterproof" gloves aren't.

my hands are always cold. when in the blind i wear jerseys and never hunt without
my little buddy heater in front of me.

get a fleece hand muffler and stick a hand warmer or two in it. On the really cold days you will be fine and still have either bare hands or very light gloves to shoot and call with.

I am like Jim. I have a bucket full of gloves with me. Getting one pair wet happens all the time. Spares are greatly appreciated by anyone who soaks theirs.

I rarely use any gloves when I hunt but for Ice Fishing I use a pair of Military Surplus "Flyers Mittens". They have wool liners and long cuffs, are easy to get off and on in a hurry and can be clipped to your waders or on a string around your neck (yeah, I know that's for 3 year olds but it works). You can still find them online if you do a search. They aren't cheap though.

I have commissioned a pair of camo mittens (with trigger finger hole) and matching helmet liner from my wife who loves knitting. We shall see how good alpaca wool holds up and how warm it is. I am thinking it will be just right!

Dave......something I started using this year is winter golf gloves. They come as a pair and so far have worked very well with temps into the 30's. They aren't waterproof but for sitting in the blind and then shooting with them on, they've worked great. No problems like those trying to shoot with a bulky pair on........Tim

I cannot run a duck call well and a goose call worse with gloves on. It does not resonate properly to my ear and throws the pitch IMHO. That said I will use a muff with a hand warmer in it at times. I do not trust messing with my gun wearing gloves it just does not feel "safe" to me.

My debut as a hand model! Here you can see the first prototype of the mitts my wife made me. I originally wanted them all enclosed with thumb and trigger finger holes, but these will be great and less stuff to get in the way. I figure the dark winter green is an OK colour and next pair I will ask for camo :) The alpaca wool is very soft and non itchy... Two thumbs up for my wife!

I will test them out in the new year or maybe when I shoot some clays with my new gun over the holidays
