Winter hibernation is over...

Tod,

Looks like you had a nice catch of Quahogs.
We went out to the flats Sunday to fill a few buckets. I keep a fresh bottle of Gold's cocktail sauce in the boat so we can enjoy the clams right on the beds.

Do you set any lobster traps out that way in the deeper water?

I was just saying that it is getting near clamming time.

Sorry to hear that you are still having issues with the cold water retrieves. I hear that it's a real PITA.

I already miss the boat, the saltwater and the sea food and Gus but not you ;). Just like Carl said, TORTURE!!

Winter littlenecks are awesome raw, I don't eat them enough.

I've never lobstered. I've been kinda watching for pots, but kept my wallet in my pocket when deals have come up.

I can give you my schedule when I'm out of town for you to plan a visit :).

Get out there, they are runnin'. I suspect that the big chowders are making their way through your area by now.

As far as trouble with cold water retrieves, that is what the dogs are for. :).

That is excellent Tod. Makes me think it's time to hit the flats soon. If we keep having this kind of weather(70's) it will soon become sweaty work to rake a hundred or so............Very nice haul!

We were cold that day with the wind steady at 10-15 it was no shirt sleeve raking :). I think Jen about froze and never took her life vest off, but she did only have 3 mm stocking foots and a light pair of socks on - WTF?!? We have some good tides coming up next month.

We (Jen Gus and I) took the canoe on the lake here yesterday and it was crazy how beautiful it was. We were testing the idea of taking the canoe when we go to Wyoming and seeing how Gus did in it. Worked out well, but there will be some cringing going on when Gus has a fishing pole and hooks on it :). Got to see a beaver and a 'coon really close up too.
Just add a baby to the equation and that'd be me 20 years ago! Hooks in the lab's nose, babies head bouncing off the bottom of the boat,Wife swearing like a trooper at me! The great wife, baby, dog, fishing, experiment gone bad...very bad.
glad to see you weren't putting that nice dog in that cold, cold water!! little necks on the half shell raw love 'm!!!

little necks on the half shell raw love 'm!!!

That would be interesting. Never had clams raw that weren't surrounded by rice, seaweed and wasabi. Trip.

Use to shuck'm for the old timers at the lions club bash, they would keep my beer mug full and I would shuck. I. have never had eaten a bad one,but I have a cast iron stomach. Of course I was also fond of saying,"roadkill it's what's for breakfast" :)

Raw, steamed or fried, gotta love clams.

Every once in a while in the winter I will stumble upon some oysters. Break out a screw driver or leatherman tool and chow down. Nothing like cold salty raw oysters eaten right on the water.

You should try it some time. Much better than clams...hehe
I don't run pot strings but do dive for them. My biggest was a 13lb'er and it only had one claw.
Now that the DEC has changed the laws we can't keep them if they are that big.

John,

How old would a lobster that big be? I don't kow how to age them but I have been told they can live a long time

Mike,

I'm not sure but from what I was told after we ate it, he was somewhere around 70+. If I had know that I think I may have let him go.
