Wood River/Arcadia/Rhode Island

Floated the Wood this AM from the quanset hut to Frying Pan Pond. Thought it would be a good idea - no competition because first day of shotgun deer season. Saw no ducks at all.

Talked to a DEM employee & he said (sea ducks aside) the migrants really aren't this far south yet. He knows guys in Maine still shooting teal. As soon as the Maine corn fields get some snow cover we should get some new ducks down here (he said).

Gary,
you should be commended for your hard work. Next time you need to take a fly rod and drag a streamer just to have a little bit of a distraction from the ducks.

That brings back memories. I used to live in RI.

I shot some teal and wood ducks last week up here near Lk Champlain.
Just a trace of snow on Whiteface Mt. for the "opener" today. (way upstate N.Y.)

Still lots of Mallards/Blacks in the beaver ponds in the ADKs.

I'll be down there for Jan. though.

Bob - wasn't work but it was scary in a 16' canoe. Lots of current. I tied off my younger Boykin amidships & kept hollaring at her to "sit". We were going to take turns shooting but my friend is a little less fat than I am so we left him in the front.

re: fishing

My only trout fishing anymore is one mid-June outing around Eustis Maine. Mostly planted trout but lots are feisty holdovers. We did see one good sized fish jump between Frying Pan & the take out. Looked like a trout. I wouldn't expect trout could tolerate summer temps there.

Rhode Island has a very good stocking program and puts in nice fish. I am pretty sure they do a fall stocking. That wood river watershed is a very nice place to spend an afternoon.

Not Maine, but only an hour from my house.

Gary ,

Nice job thought about doing that this morning as well, have doen it numerous times downstream with great sucess in the past, cannot wait to get the hummer done and do it again , The Wood River is a great trout river fish Higbanks and the pines all the time know that water like the back of my hand , ever try the Hex hatch in the summer for those lunker trout ? Great times there . Ri does stock Fall but mostly for ice fishing Salmo and lake trout from what i understand , took a trip out to a local saltwater spot and O ducks hope this weather strats them moving soon .

I was in the USCG for 20 years & accumulated a lot of fly rods/gear & had an opportunity to live/fish in Alaska & N Michigan. In its own way the Eustis Maine area compares with any spot I've hunted or fished including the Trinity Alps in N CA, Glacier National Park & Colorado for Elk. In the summer/early Fall I concentrate on salt water around the mouth of the Sakonnet River - again in its own way as quality an outing as is possible anywhere - including a favorable comparison to salmon fishing in Alaska.

I've been focused on pheasants with my Boykins because a couple areas are close & I enjoy the dog work. I try to get up to Maine once in the Fall but it is a long drive.

I'm getting bored with released birds & am trying to shift to ducks for a better wild bird experience. Sea ducks don't interest me. I really do not want to be on truely big water in the winter (noted too many duck hunter winter accidents while I was in the CG).

I'm close to Sapowet in Tiverton & can hunt mid week. I also am going to start learning to float the fresh water creeks. Also got a MA license & have been over to W Branch of the Westport River a couple times. I need to learn the rythm of that area but it certainly gets high marks for scenery.
