Working Decoys doing the work.

We show lots of pictures of decoys on our benches I thought I would make and effort to take pictures of my decoys doing their work this season.

These first three are all Jode Hillman style decoys. I was able to attend his SW Michigan class this summer and it was big influence on my carving and painting techniques. Small details make the big differences is one of many lessons I took away from that weekend. Thanks Jode and Paul for the class!

They were very effective at their job and we as hunters did our part as well.

Jode's style of decoy carving and painting will no doubt leave a mark on my work in the future. I am in the process now of working through a few more done in this style cleaning up the paint work and blending and have plans to experiment more with variations of the style.

These six make up a small rig of solid cedar birds with the two hens being Great lake style bobtails. The remaining four drakes are Connecticut River style obvious influences would include Shang Wheeler and Keith Mueller whom I was also lucky enough to spend time in class with a year ago.

These pictures are from my opening weekend spent with my son.

and this from the same weekend some of the other assorted decoys in the spread. You may notice the lack of the teal decoy sadly She was lost in Canada my hope i someone finds her and either hunts her or tracks me down off the name plate on the bottom and returns her. Either one is acceptable in my mind.

Nice lookin bluewings Brandon! Your spread looks great. How was the opener this past weekend? What are you seeing for numbers this year? I scouted Sag. Bay on saturday and there wasn't too much to get excited about yet.

Brandon,
great start of a new idea. It is hard to remember to stop during the hunt and take those shots but they are the best ones.
I have a friend who used to send bottles out to sea with notes. He even started one out in Alaska. You never know when someone might get back to you.
Till then carve another one, they sure look awesome.

Looks like a great rig Brandon. Beautiful early season Blue-wings. I always enjoy seeing decoys doing their job!

Each decoy you make is more refined than the last. It was great to meet you and the family this summer. Always glad to help a fellow carver/hunter along in his journey.

Thanks for sharing Brandon! Nice looking decoys... I hope someone finds your teal and sends it back.

I need to add a Stormy to my christmas wish list!

Really nice...Nothing better than being able to hunt over your own blocks...Good luck...Keep them coming...

Nicely done!

Hope you get a call on your wayward decoy. Had a nice widgeon that had drifted away from us when we were hunting out of state returned by a hunter who found it. There are good folks out there!

Awsome shots Brandon.Good looking decoys with influence from one of the best. We need more people to post up photos of there decoys at work.

Glad you guys liked them.

The teal has a twin sitting on my bench base coated but now that season is open things are not moving along for her. Maybe in a few days.

The kids really liked the face paint and had a good time.. I was out again this morning with a very similar spread out and would have snapped a few pictures if the fog ever left. It was really still this morning. Much better day for shooting though got a few birds I need to go clean it was hard IDing the mallard drakes this morning had to wait for the drake quack on singles before pulling the trigger lots of mallards got a pass this morning. Small ducks I was quicker to pull the trigger.

Dave, I see your email now guess I missed it.

Beautiful looking decoys! I really need to get in on Jode's class.

There is nothing more satisfying for a carver than gunning over your own decoys. I've got a decent spread I've built this year and I'm trying to finish a rig of mallards in time. Can't wait to gun over them.

Brandon,

WOW! Those block look awesome. I remember the pics of (I think they were buffies) sitting in your back porch carving shop when you first got started, and how you felt challenged with making your own. You have indeed met the challenge! Have a great season over some great decoys.

Regards,
B (the duck Troll)
