Yo Travis Facebook, Google Privacy concern.

OK call me paranoid, Facebook suggest that I ask Travis Bruce to be my friend. The only connection I have with Travis is this site. I guess somehow the fine folks at Google are "helping" me make the connection. Think this is a privacy concern? I do.

Do you share friends in common or are you both fans of sites/events/causes? You think FB has somehow compared email addresses here with their monster database and suggested you be friends because you are both members here? I don't know the answer but I haven't gotten the same suggestion.

My only connection with Travis is this site. I think I once traded email with him on a dog isuue. Other than that no connection.

All social media is a privacy concern. If you participate in it you are vunerable to some type of marketing. Facebook constantly changes their system and you have to continually check on your profile settings to make sure you are not sharing every thing with the World at Large.

If you filled out your profile with similar "things you like to do" info as travis bruce then Facebook will figure it out and send you a friend request.

For example about four weeks after going Facebook it suggested that I add Evan Graham as a friend since we both like "retreiver training". Evan Graham is the Smarkworks guy. I have some of his stuff and had emailed him questions prior to joining Facebook, but that email account is not the one I use frequently and Facebook can not see it or cookies from it.

In the end it has a lot to do with your profile and the data mining that goes on behind the scenes.

If you have a google email account then you have already been hammered by their Buzz social media system and the huge fall out last week when the entire world of Gmail became your best friend in a half second. Hopefully the law suits come full circle and Google pulls their heads out of their butts soon.

Usually when those suggestions come up they say you have "x" friends in common. They can search for emails addresses in your address book but you have to authorize it.

Sorry for going off on a tangent, but does anyone know if I can post pics from my FB page to here? It'd be way easier than also posting them to photobucket.

PM is fine if someone knows the answer.

Thanks,
NR

Nick... we want a public answer to that.. we could all benefit if there is a way.

As far as privacy.. if you are concerned... you shouldn't be on social networking sites or forums... no being a smartass... just that once it is on the web... don't ever believe it is secure....IMO hmmmm....now that I think of it...The White House in 2012 is out for me now....

No way that I know of to do it directly but if you right click the pic in your FB album and "save as" save it as a JPEG and it should be small enough to attach here.

Here is a test. Looks like it works. Just right click, save image location and then paste it in your message into the picture link box.
I still think the Facebook suggestion must have come through your email address book that you authorized FB to search for friends rather than mining information here on DBnet.

Robert,
Do not know how it works, but Facebook just suggested Travis as a friend for me, too. It's been several years, but I did exchange a few emails with him. Really makes you wonder who is tracking what on the internet....

I think Chris had it right. Travis likely allowed them to look at his e-mail account and they found your e-mail address in there. It could also be a set of similar friends, though not as likely given what you said.
