The first time I was able but not able (married now) to go north with the crew from Paducah...Got the message they did "OK" today with shooting only 50 snows...I'm sick...Honey can I buy a plane ticket and be back Friday?
Kristan, that feeling and or memory will slowly go away, that is until you receive the next email (with pics) from your old duck hunting buddies from Paducah.
Al
Welcome to married life!!!!
You will get to experience a lot of those days, when you are standing in some mall, or some goofy social event, or blah, blah, blah, at noon on a Saturday when the weather is perfect, saying to yourself what the hell am I doing here?????
Hank hit it on the head. I have learned to cope with Shiner bock and doing taxidermy. I used to go to Ilinois for two weeks a season and hammer geese, now I need to submit a leave request at least 6 months out with the wife and kids for time not to exceed 2 full days of waterfowl hunting. The mule deer lease is a bit differant though. I can take one of the kids with me to drive the mountains and scout usually. Good luck this season!
Of course...... (and I hate to rub this in ;-) ;-))
....one thing has altered that dreadful feeling for me. Now I remember to think : "I'll guess I'll go tomorrow."
Welcome to reality. I on the other hand have a spouse that uses reverse sociology. She'll tell me how spoiled I am and that I'm free to go.............if I can afford it. Seems like everytime an invite comes up I can't afford it. You'll learn to hunt vicariously though others.
Don't feel bad. We have all been there. Now that my kids have all graduated from high school and are away in college. I have the time but don't have the money. LOL
I hunt a lot locally but still have the urge to travel. Oh well, that just leaves more to look forward to down the road.
Thank you for the advise and humor...Just venting on a mid evening after seeing a commented "Text" from Strathclair, Manitoba from a familiar phone number...I know of those sacrifices and what to expect and appreciate it...Will roll with the punches...I guess it really sinks home now when I can remember in highschool my grandfather told me one evening while cuttinng tobacco...I was trying to get away to my high school sweet heart to go up to Kentucky Lake; 2 rows into the 16 rows of the crop..."Son stay away from those women as long as you can stand it, cause the day you can stand it, you can't stand not doing the things you have always been free to do!" True...True...
Kristen,
Did you hunt before you got married? I did, and dated my wife for 5 years before we got married. Not to rub it in your face, but I goose hunted the morning we had a evening Dr appointment on inducing our son being born. And went on a snow goose trip when he was 2 months old.. The snow goose trip was planned, but it was suppose to be 3 days and she said 2. So I said "no problem"... The thing I try and do is compromise and pick & choose your battles. I plan 1 or 2 small trips a year. And let her do & buy what she wants. Keep her happy.. " A happy wife is a happy life... "
My wife does not have any problem with it as long as I budget the hunt ahead of time...It was a deal where we were not going then last minute discussions about 4 months out...Did not have time to save the funds to venture this year...The morning pictures of 50 to 75 birds (darks and snows) then the afternoon pictures they send of the various duck species they are taking gets to me though. Three days into the hunt 5 guys have numbers around 175 birds...Legal possession limits in Manitoba are 80 snows, 24 darks, and 24 ducks in possession...Two more days to go...They might have 5 guys travel across boundaries with a fuller cooler then last year...That is just a touch hunt to miss every year...Duck, darks in the freezer with burger made out of the snows...I'm crying on the inside...
Your a lucky man to get away with some of those things...I'll have to build into those days...
225 after 4 days. You better hope the better half doesn't see your musings. Having a difficult time posting pics. Oh yeah, we've shot 2 bands so far. We've eaten like kings: blackened duck, snow goose fajitas, goose burgers, confit, and orange marmalade canvasbacks. Debbie has made German chocolate cake and apple pie. Molson falling by the case. Malbec flowing.
I know how you feel after not being able to go last year.
