Tuesday morning I opened the door to head to work and was confronted by this cow moose on the other side of the BB3. Typically this happens in the winter when they are in my yard eating the apple trees and trimming back the currant bushes. This cow was not going anywhere and refused to shoo off. She turned her rear to me and that is when I saw the afterbirth, and I started looking for the calf. Didn't see it so I scooted around the truck and snuck in while she was not looking.
And that is when this little fella stood up from where it was hiding in a flower bed and tottered over to his mom. This is the second calf born in this yard in the last four years. It is a mile from the woods on the backside of the Army post, so the calf is safe from bears, coyotes and wolves for a while as it lives in the neighborhood. I would guess that at the time of this photo the calf was 4 to 6 hours old.
