youth help

Been here a long time but don't post much but I need a little help.

I am the local chairman for Ducks Unlimited.
all of the outdoor groups have decide to do a "iou" Intoducing outdoors to youth. not any one group is responsible but all of the groups are putting on a display or short seminar to get kids more interested in hunting fishing and other outdoor activities.

my volunteers have been tossing around some ideas but I would like some input from all of you guys.

some of the ideas that we have had are:

setting up a goose decoy spread complete with blinds and 10 dozen decoys (room is not an issue)

setting up a water duck spread complete with a boat off of the trailer so kids could get in and have a feel for what it might be like.

decoy painting just like it sounds but it is hard to get just primed decoys for kids to paint and the ducks don't ever look like ducks not that it matters.

duck and goose calling some local call makers have decided to help me out with this and we have kind of all ready decided that we would do calling seminars for all of the critters.

so lets hear what you have seen or think would work

thanks ahead of time

Matt,
John got to paint an E Allen at a show a while back. It was a golden eye. Easy black and white paint job using Goldens Acrylic. Hair dryer made for quick work. A buffy would work great as well.

The field and water set ups sound awesome! I like that idea a lot. Can you add targets? This was a youth shooter at Tuckerton in a BBSB.

Calls for geese, ducks and even predator calls like crow and rabbit squeal might be fun!

How about a carver with a spoke shave and a bunch of sawed out decoy bodies on a carving horse or vise. Round away!

Dont forget a good dog handling demonstration.

A couple of good dogs honoring each other when a couple of birds are launched out of a Winger Zinger is a site to behold when the calls are going and the gun goes off.

Anything where the kids are doing something is better than you showing them something. If they can take something home with them, that's even better.

a couple of liting factors are that we are inside and we are doing this in january. we are planning on doing a nother one in the spring. that will be out side so we can do more shooting with out having to bring in the poratable ranges.

Go with the field type setups and see if you can find a retriever that will go on a kids fetch signal and have the handler help show them a retrieve.

I have put on many cork decoy carving clinics. If you have anybody that does cork carving, you could have the blocks all cut out (TEARDROP SHAPE) and let the kids work out the bodies and paint them. Let me know if you need any other info. It's messy, but the kids actually leave with a physical reminder of their day. I also second the dog demonstration. dc

Matt-
I'll come up if you want to carve decoys or paint. Maybe make or paint silos ? Let me know if you need anything from down here.
I am getting antzy, so get ready to see me on the doorstep in a couple of weeks.
