Youth model rifle

Stay with a 308 please. It will knock 'em down. We just had a hunter with us that hit a big buck with a .270 and two hours looking for him to no avail. I'm sure a 308 would have stopped him. My two cents.

He is a good sized boy,I am leaning towards adult sized rifle,he is 5'7" tall and 125 lbs, and the hunt is not until next fall

Hey, how old is this "boy"? By that height/weight I would say that is a grown-ass man. I only have him by about 25lbs...

Sounds to me like he is ready for an adult sized gun.
Best advise would be to take him to a range where he can try several different guns and calibers. I would see how he shoots with somewhat lighter loads then move up to larger caliber and hotter loads as long as he can handle it.

Shot placement will always be key the to success, caliber comes second.

He is 12 years old,i know he is going to be a big lad, that is for sure,he has size 11 feet, just about have to feed him with a shovel,LOL!!!!

Just keep letting him think you are still the boss. ;>)

For my 50th birthday I gave myself an elk hunt & carried my 308. Most everyone else in the group had a 300 winmag. One used 7 MM Mag. Another a 30 06. My son-in-law's New Mexico elk guide uncle prefers his clients carry 300 winmags.

For anything bigger than a deer I'd acquire a 30-06 and have him shoot reduced recoil loads.

I shot a 270, full sized rifle, when I smaller than Jed. Great round for antelope and deer, but I would be hesitant to use on anything larger IMHO.

Best
Chuck
