Blizzard 2026 - How's things in your area?

The waves I spoke of, we were on the water. We were running a 30' Albemarle with twin diesels at the time. It was the September before hurricane Sandy. We were 80 miles offshore at the Toms Canyon out of NJ. The weather forecast looked great. We overnighted which was beautiful. The next morning...

Hope they get you back online soon, Jode. I didn't realize it was that bad down your way.

Blizzard 2026 - How's things in your area?

I've seen 10-12'. It still haunts me to this day. 24' seas are deadly for almost all vessels besides the ultra large. Couple that with whiteout conditions, no good.

Blizzard 2026 - How's things in your area?

Real bad here in NJ. I am in the north, off the water. 20" of snow here. Last night I woke up to go to the bathroom and it was a real deal blizzard outside. Whiteout conditions, 60 mph winds, and drifting snow. The coastal areas from Long Beach Island to Sandy Hook I'm being told got crushed...

    Brant banding question

It is, but this was bound to happen. Nature seems to find a way to control it's population.

    Brant banding question

Lots of good info in this thread. If you asked me what I thought my first band would have been I would have said Brant. It ended up being a 10 year old black duck. I have however, had banded Brant shot by friends sitting next to me. My buddy shot a transmitter bird with double color bands (which...

“On the Ebb” - Black duck hunting film by Field & Stream

I saw the preview for this on FB. I mentioned to @Craig F that I thought it might be NJ. He correctly pointed out to me it looked like LINY. I can't wait to give this a thorough watch when I have a moment.

DNR Rescues Duck Hunters From River

Greg, I cut my teeth in that area boating and hunting for 30 years. I know exactly what you're talking about. Those creeks are often the last to stay open due to the current. When that ice breaks loose near the stagnant water, the current rips through there like crazy. Glad you made it out...

The End of Duck/Goose Season . WHAT IS NEXT?

February and at least, early March, will likely be down time. Then in March, time to start prepping out 36' express w/ twin diesels. Lots of work to get that in the water every year. Repairs, maintenance, upgrades, etc. My son, going to be 4, is ready to go for this offshore season. With that...

    From rags to riches

Love the bracket supporting the motor board. That will solve a ton of problems known to that rig. Very nice work.

DNR Rescues Duck Hunters From River

This type of situation is always in the back of my mind when you're on the brink of a real deep freeze. I know of folks it happened to here in NJ. Only heard the story 2nd hand from one of the involved individuals but, they left the ramp and couldn't get back. Luckily, it happened to a few boats...

Reflection on Traditions: Jonathan Detwiler -Filson Feature

Loving the vintage Filson attire. I have that exact same Mackinaw cruiser and shelter cloth wading jacket. Beautifully done article that really captures the heritage.

Cold Snap, how low did you go?

We saw 3-4 degrees in northern NJ I believe at one point. Sunday, cleaning snow in the morning, it was close to unbearable. I believe it was 4-5 degrees at that point. My hands were freezing in a matter of 5 minutes using orange crabber gloves. I had my wife rotating gloves for me off the glove...

Jersey black ducks for the finale.

I completely agree. I was unique in the sense that I was brought up with boating and fishing in my blood, but my father wasn't at all a hunter. Incredibly, I was 30-31 when I got into hunting. My personality is such that when I take to something, I go all in on it. My son seems to be the same...

Jersey black ducks for the finale.

Eric, Thank you for the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed the story. The future does appear bright. My soon to be 4yo son is absolutely obsessed with duck hunting (and fishing). Talks weekly about going to the decoy show, "helps" me clean birds, and throws an absolute fit if I don't show...
