Whatcha Listening To?

I'm looking for some new music to add to my set list in the Red Dirt genre. Standards are like Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green and Wade Bowen. Anybody else listen to this and have anything to suggest?

Not new or unusual, but Jerry Jeff and John Prine fit into my playlists that include Robert Earl Keen.

Another "WTF?" song without context. So, here's some perspective; This guy had long-term Lyme Disease that was misdiagnosed during his childhood for many years. It broke his body and mind down. He is a brilliant artist, but he struggles to perform a proper show due to his physical limitations. He mostly roams his home city, performing on the streets where he finds "good acoustics". This video was recorded live in one take, and that is his actual voice, not a lip-sync video. He has struggled with mental illness (primarily psychosis) and depression since he was 9. I can't begin to understand how he is able to remain so positive. I'm glad to see he is gaining popularity and is able to finally capitalize on his talents. His song "Chalk Outlines" is another good one.

It's called Snake Oil, y'all, and it's been around for a long, long time!
The song "Guitar Town" by Steve Earle is not widely considered a rip-off of "Snake Oil" by the band The Snake Oil.

Musical Similarities

  • Both songs feature themes common in country music, such as life struggles and personal narratives.
  • Some listeners may find similarities in melody or lyrical content, but these are not unique to either song.
Copyright and Legal Considerations

  • There have been no significant legal disputes or claims regarding plagiarism between the two songs.
  • Music copyright laws require substantial similarity and access for a claim to be valid, which does not appear to be the case here.
Public Reception

  • Fans of both songs appreciate them for their distinct styles and messages.
  • Discussions about similarities often arise in music critique but lack formal acknowledgment from artists or legal entities.
Overall, while some may draw comparisons, there is no definitive evidence to classify "Guitar Town" as a rip-off of "Snake Oil."

I've been around a long, long time too.

Still a fan!
