    With a shattered heart

Dani, I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I felt like I knew him through his stories and other's stories of him. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

    Gordon MacQuarrie stories

Thanks Guys, I'll have a look at the MacQuarrie Miscellany book. I do have another book from Willow Creek called The Gordon MacQuarrie Sporting Treasury from 1998. The dust jacket says "Includes 16 Stories Never Before Published In Book form". It also says that Zack Taylor was the force...

    Gordon MacQuarrie stories

The story is called "Pothole Guys, Friz Out". The book says it originally appeared in "Outdoorsman", which is apparently a magazine I am not familiar with. It doesn't say when it was first published.

    Gordon MacQuarrie stories

I know there are some Gordon MacQuarrie readers here. My wife gave me the Zack Taylor compilation trilogy in 1986. In it, Zack suggests that there are probably no more stories to be discovered; he had found them all. So imagine my surprise when I bought a compilation of hunting stories at a used...

    Taking Decoys across the boarder?

My experience is similar to Steve's. Never took decoys across, but I've been in Ontario with plenty of hiking/camping/canoeing gear and never had the least problem crossing either way with it. I can't imagine why decoys would be any different.

HP required to plane 12ft Higher BBSB.

Here's a link to a guy who made a "full conversion" of a Johnson 9.9 to 15. In addition to the carb and exhaust housing, he also mentions something about the leaf valves: https://www.outboardguy.com/evinrudejohnson-99hp-vs-15hp.html I'm really curious about the comments that a 15 won't...

Mt. Clemens Decoy Legacy... (Repost for new members)

Thanks Tony. I appreciate the heads-up, but I just can't bring another boat home right now. First, I don't have any more room in the pole barn, and traditional wooden boats don't last long if left outside. Second, until I retire, I just don't have the time it takes to maintain any more old...

Mt. Clemens Decoy Legacy... (Repost for new members)

Pat, thanks for sharing these old pictures. I rarely see sneak boats discussed online. By sneak boats, I'm talking about double-ended open water sneak boats, as were used on the great lakes, and of which you show a great example in your pictures. They were very popular here during the first half...

Divers flaring on me in my new layout boat

I'm a little puzzled by this. When you say "into the wind", do you mean the decoys are upwind from the layout? Is your layout boat facing into the wind? We usually just start by anchoring the layout boat facing straight downwind, then set the decoys in a rough rectangle starting about even with...

    Lost a Legend

I saw him a time or two at the Point Mouilee Duck Hunter's Tournament. Quite a character. I always thought his layout boats were the best-looking of the bunch. When I got into layout hunting in the mid '70's, a Kalash boat was widely thought to be "the one to have".

    Layout boat suggestions

benp, I'll agree with the others that a Barnegat Bay Sneakbox is probably the best fit for your described purpose. Stay away from boats like the Kara you mentioned. Boats like that can be wonderful in the marshes, ponds, and other closely sheltered water, but they have no place on open water...

    Hunting Etiquette in your area

Michigan has the "first come first served" approach to any blind on the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair. It doesn't apply to blinds on inland waters. When I got into duck hunting in the early '70's, there were lots of permanent (seasonal) blinds scattered all over the place on Lake St. Clair. I...

    DB navigation lites

The Mercury outboard on my 16 footer has electric start, so I have regular hard-wired nav lights on that one. Fire extinguisher too. But on my sneak boats, which have no battery, I use the little clip-on nav lights that have their own internal batteries. Mine are the old fashioned ones that have...

I broke the engine on my Merry Meeting Bay Scull Float

Mr. Werner, You really need to disassemble a couple of things to figure out what exactly is wrong with your motor. If I may make a suggestion or two: 1) Remove the swivel. I think that only requires the removal of four screws. The exhaust housing is one continuous tube in the area where it...

I broke the engine on my Merry Meeting Bay Scull Float

I think the lower unit on Scott's motor can be used on Mr. Werner's motor, but it won't be quite a direct swap. Scott's motor is a later generation. I think they started making that one in 1979. I tried to put an older '70's long shaft lower onto an early '80's 4hp Evinrude. It seemed do-able...

If you were to only own one shotgun

I've been shooting my Remington 870 since I bought it new in '75. It has been dependable as a hammer. But before last year's duck season my son bought a new Remington V3 and whenever he was hunting with me we used that one. It's a real sweetie. It's pretty light for a 3" 12 gauge autoloader...

    Prop Stupid

I agree with the others that the motor appears to be mounted too high. I suggest you take a yardstick or similar straightedge hold it against the bottom of the boat near the centerline extending it out toward the motor. This will simulate the waterline when the boat is on plane. The cav plate...

    Prop Stupid

In my experience a prop with a slipping hub will perform perfectly at any speed below the point at which the shaft torque exceeds the holding ability of the defective rubber hub. When that point is exceeded, the hub seems to slip completely, and the motor races as if there is no load on it...
