just received my new layout blind

Thats a nice blind. Can your dog fit in with you? Serious question, no black eyes.

Which pattern would you rather hunt with?

Interesting question. I cut open a couple of shells, I have #4's and #7's in my hand. I crushed a couple, I don't see the "plating" delaminating. I'm not sure what the copper coating is, plating or paint. I need to study it under a magnifying glass. On lead pellets, from years ago until present...

No Name Scull Boat Build......update........ We named her the Double Nickel.........

Thanks for reposting. I was wondering where this old post was, I've been thinking about trying the strip insulation build for a while, although on a pond box. Very cool.

Which pattern would you rather hunt with?

It's hard to have too much choke with the Boss Bismuth. It does pattern much like lead, but tends to open up a bit faster since it's only 90-some percent the density. To my eye, your full is the right choke, any bird in that pattern isn't flying away. There are several light regions in the...

    pro tip for dog owners

That one hurts. Our dogs ding us up from time to time, but hunting wouldn't be as much fun if the dog wasn't excited. Wear a patch, you can be PirateDave for a week.

    Duck Hunter Drowns on Guntersville

Always very sad when someone is lost. Worse still is the young man's age. Every time I launch the thought crosses my mind about how dangerous duck hunting is. As you said, the heavy gear is overwhelming in the water. I recall a hunter drowning at the dock several years ago, within ten feet of...

What would the duckboats group do?

If it's a tossup get the sneakbox. You already have a jonboat, if nothing else change it up a little. Easy to launch and quite seaworthy for any given size. Get one with a solid cockpit cover. You can hunt out of the sneakbox without a fancy popup blind and everything but the gun stays in it...

    Disturbing Ducks

I hunted early this morning. Got to the spot almost an hour before legal, quite a bit of thin ice to break on the way out. Nice Geminid meteor shower. As mentioned before, I idle away from the launch then get up on plane for the two mile ride. When I pulled into the spot, a group of birds got...

    Disturbing Ducks

It's a shame that's the case. There's plenty of mischief to get into without aggravating the neighbors. The old 30 minutes before sunrise 4 man volley is a nice hangover chaser as well.

    Disturbing Ducks

I can see where they might get testy if guys roar out at full throttle. With the mud motor I idle a couple of hundred yards away from the ramp in the morning, to avoid waking the dead. Been doing it when near homes using conventional outboards for years, it's just good manners.

Duck Hunters Arrested for Beating Another Hunter at Felsenthal Nat'l Refuge

Right on guys. There was no shortage of googans when I was a kid, but nobody had a cellphone. And news was news, not a 2 hour drama show. No excuse for this crap though.

    Disturbing Ducks

I only use it in brackish marshes. Yes, it flies across mud like nobody's business as long as you don't stop. Very impressive. If you do stop.... This faux pas took me an hour or so to push the boat to that next corner up ahead where there was water. As long as there's a skim of water, off...

    Disturbing Ducks

I'm probably the wrong guy to ask since I just bought one two months ago. It is loud, deafening so wide open. There are only a few around here so I doubt it will become an issue in CT. Guys roar around through the creeks and bays with conventional motors at anything but low tide so I don't think...

    Let's Talk About Site Access

Every decent website struggles with this question. The most difficult part of gaining and retaining potentially decent participants is getting a hook in them. They do a Google search for duck hunting websites, then surf. What makes DHBP stand out from the others if the most eye catching stuff...

    well this sucks

This is my first year using raffia, I'm starting to see the wind knots and messy strands you describe. I bought a little Stihl battery powered hedge trimmer, which I use to supplement the raffia with local grass. While it looks good, it's a pita to do every time. I'm sure you're loop setup works...

    Urban Scaup

I thought I read that high selenium levels caused scaup hens to not lay, or the eggs to fail. Further, that this problem was exacerbated by the birds keying on zebra and quogga mussels in the Great Lakes for the last 35 years. Or maybe the mind is going.

    Urban Scaup

That was my first thought as well. Then I remembered that scaup like a pile of corn as much as mallards. I've seen flocks hang around back yards on salt water where people feed the ducks regularly.

    Early end to the season

Duck season may be over, but ice fishing season may be on the horizon. [w00t]
