Urban Scaup

Drove by a 1/4 acre stormwater pond in a commercial area down the street from the house. This pond always has blackbelly whistling ducks and park mallards on it.
This morning it also had coots and a small flock of greater scaup!
The scaup were busily diving, so they weren't there just for freshwater, must be some food down there.

Nope, way too big and I had too good a look at them. Saw them again yesterday and slowed down to show my daughter. She said, yep bluebills.

So are you saying I owe you a corn dog, or do I also have to get one for your daughter?

Those things ain't cheap man.
It isn't like corndogs just grow on trees.

Look Carl,

When we started this, you never mentioned anything about the possibility of needing another corn dog.

I am not sure how wagering works over where you and this previously unmentioned 3rd party (daughter) to the corn dog wager are?
Over here we don't do 3rd party corn dog deals. Its one corn dog per wager.

If Al were still with us, he'd agree that that second corn dog is over the limit.

If you are insistent that the 2nd corn dog is needed, then I will acquiesce, but I ask that you thoughtfully reconsider your 2nd corn dog stance on this matter.
I remind you that this is a forum where others may read and review this dialog and base certain views upon what is read here.

Should you require a 2nd corn dog in order to satisfy and resolve this matter, I'll need to ask you for additional time to successfully obtain funding, source, verify and ship the additional corn dog.
I may not be able to guarantee that any additional corn dogs beyond the first, is USDA inspected and not of foreign origin.

In order to proceed with the second corn dog arrangement, I will require photographic evidence of said bluebills to indeed verify that they are not ringnecked ducks.

Should you wish to retract your second corn dog demand, I will agree to send you the single corn dog based upon your statement, that what you and your daughter viewed were indeed bluebill ducks in order to resolve this matter.
I would appreciate your response to this in a timely matter.

When we lived in Florida, I worked in downtown Orlando and there was a flock of bluebills that would come into Lake Eola every morning and leave around 11:00 am. The history museum has a pictures taken in the early 1900s of women feeding 500 "ducks" on L. Eola and every one is a blue bill. Kind of cool.
Bluebills eat clams.

Where did those women get all of the clams to feed them?
That was my first thought as well. Then I remembered that scaup like a pile of corn as much as mallards. I've seen flocks hang around back yards on salt water where people feed the ducks regularly.

Todd Duncan Tennyson said:
I think that the high selenium content of the clams is what causes their bills to be blue.

I thought I read that high selenium levels caused scaup hens to not lay, or the eggs to fail. Further, that this problem was exacerbated by the birds keying on zebra and quogga mussels in the Great Lakes for the last 35 years. Or maybe the mind is going.

You are correct, high selenium levels in hen scaup from eating invasive clams was implicated in low reproductive succession, as one possible factor in the long term decline in scaup numbers.

I remember feeding some 1000 pet bluebills in Feb down at Steve's place piles of corn. They were a lot of fun to watch swimming in the clear water of the creek his house is on.

Yes, thank you Dani.
I suppose that now I'll have to acquire a 3rd corn dog and ready it for shipping.

Perhaps it would prove more efficient for me to just get a case of them to have on hand?

Well, corn dogs are so tasty that why WOULDN'T you buy a case of em???
