    Done for the Year

Eric, You are not he only duckhunter in these parts that I have heard sat they may "give up if this is how it is going to be" Some with as many years hunting the river as you have. I went for the last time Friday. The weather conditions those two days, coupled with thew high water and being...

    Canoe gunwale replacement

I have given some thought to the slotted gunwales Ray. A friend told me the slots were there to allow water to run out in stead of pooling on the inside edge of the gunwales when you store it upside down. A few of the canoe building sites I looked at showed the being made several ways. From the...

    Canoe gunwale replacement

Matt, I should have said the material is true 4/4, and will need to be milled to 3/4" x 3/4" for the gunwales. Bill may decide he likes it 4/4 and keep it that way. Thanks again for your help. Shawn

    Canoe gunwale replacement

Will do Bill! I think he said it was sawed as true 1" material, so there will be some machining to be done.

    Canoe gunwale replacement

As an update... I mentioned my wood choices to one of the older gentlemen that works for me, and he said he had some white oak stored from when he had a bandsaw mill some years back. They are 1x6x16 ft. long and he offered all I needed for free! I plan on going with him after the first to pick...

    Canoe gunwale replacement

How well do you think that white oak would bend? (3/4" x 3/4") Some guys made a hot box out of pvc to steam the gunwales before attaching them. Others said it was not needed, just plenty of clamps as stated earlier. The 16ft. boards would work out well for me Eric.

    Canoe gunwale replacement

I did not quibble over price! I figured $40 was a good price for a $1700 canoe!!! Even if it needed a little TLC (I love me some Craigslist!). I cleaned it up yesterday, and it is really is nice. If the hardwood place in Scottsboro has ash, I will probably go with that. All of the "kits" from...

    Canoe gunwale replacement

Thanks Eric! I knew they had the cypress, since Brian got his floor material from there. I appreciate the offer to mill it up. I may take you up on the offer after duck season. Shawn

    Canoe gunwale replacement

Thanks for the replies guys! Chuck your canoe turned out great! I had decided to ask Santa for a few more clamps to help out with this. I have a few feelers out looking for ash to use, but cypress is my fall back wood. I know of a place locally where I could get full length stock that I could...

    Canoe gunwale replacement

I picked up a Navarro canoe off of craigslist yesterday that needs new gunwales due to rot. I have done some reading on the net about different techniques, but I wanted to see if any of ya'll have done this. Ash seems to be the wood of choice, but I would listen to other suggestions. I am...

NDR - Stuck on what to get your wife/girlfriend/sister/mother for Christmas?

Very good suggestion Jim G. I have been filling up one of the bracelets for my wife for about a year now. She loves it and at $30-$50 per bead it does not hurt your banking account too much at each holiday or birthday. I started one for my eight year old little girl this Christmas too. Shawn

I guess I have found the ducks!

Glad to hear it Dave! You are the first person I have heard talk favorably of this season so far. Joe Bastardi (accuweather) is sticking to his guns on this December and January being cold. Too late for our friends to the north, but it may turn out good for us. By the way... pass the suntan...
