    Canoe racks?

Moose numbers are way down these days. Still plenty of them for a lottery draw hunt with a pretty high rate of success, but a combination of changes in forest management, climate change, and the related emergence of winter tick in much larger numbers to reduce calf survival in their first...

    Canoe racks?

Well, it's taken a while--and that's killing me in fishing season prime time--but I did end up with a combination of a roof bar from Yakima and a pair of rails with one set of uprights and crossbar for the bed. It took a surprising amount of back and forth to confirm that both will fit a 2024...

    Did you guys know....

Hell, you all are making feel young having only been hanging around for 15 years.

NDR but it is hunting related

Two questions. (1) What is the effective range of a crossbow for deer-sized game? (2) Are crossbows allowed during "archery" seasons in your state, or is there a separate crossbow license/season? Crossbows are now legal during archery seasons, as well as during the "firearms" season, but...

    Yet another wader question

The dark room/light inside the waders is the best way to find leaks, large or small. Even pin-prick holes and leaks along the seams show up. Circle with a sharpie, and coat with aquaseal or your goo of choice.

Very Interesting Documentary on Louisiana Coastal Habitat Loss

A great read on this subject--and on other large scale engineering projects around the world--is John McPhee's "The Control of Nature." One of the major chapters is on the lower Mississippi River. And of course there is the classic "Life on the Mississippi" by Mark Twain, with this fabulous...

    Grumman Sport Boat Update

I'm contemplating no mods except for an anchor roller off the bow and beefing up the soft plywood motor boards. Plus paint. A drain plug would be nice--anyone have a link to a good way to do it?

The old outboard is on its way out.

Google works--they have a video! Looks like just 4 bolts and nuts per rail.

The old outboard is on its way out.

Looks like they do have one that fits a 2024 Ranger--and available as a single bar to pair with a roof rack. I'm sure this differs vehicle to vehicle, but how do the rails mount to the bed?

The old outboard is on its way out.

I feel your pain. I have a new truck; my old canoe rack will not fit it; and nobody has yet designed a rack that will fit. I can find roof bars, but no clamp on racks for the bed. It's trout, shad and striper season . . . .

    Whatcha Listening To?

Stevie Ray Vaughn was the first concert I ever attended. He was opening for the Moody Blues, who had a comeback album with a radio hit out at the time. None of us had ever even heard of Stevie. Completely stole the show from the headliners, playing solo to a bunch of Maine teenagers and aging...

    Devlin’s Mallard Build

Ash is the traditional gunwale wood for canoes. Hard, bendable, pretty rot resistant if you keep it oiled or varnished.

    SeaDuck Boat pics

I'm not much of a sea-ducking fan. I don't care to eat them, and I don't shoot things I don't want to eat. (Except for woodchucks--I do like to eat what grows in my garden!) So take this with several grains of salt, as I only have a few sea ducking experiences. If you really want to hunt sea...

    Canoe racks?

After trying with little success to find a suitable rack solution on various websites, I finally took the advice on their website and called Oak Orchard Canoe. My roof rack solution was answered in detail, with options and pricing, in a 10-minute call. They also helped me figure out that what...

    Canoe racks?

Yes indeed, thank you, Chuck. I will definitely be looking at Oak Orchard. FWIW, I also sent an email to my local Rack Attack outlet store, and they offered a single bar from Yakima with towers and assorted mounting hardware for $350. Seems steep, but the Yakima and Thule racks are pricy...

The old outboard is on its way out.

A different category of motor, but I bought my Suzuki 6 hp via Online Outboards a few months ago based on feedback from this site and local friends. No complaints so far--but I am just about through the break-in period.

    Canoe racks?

Thanks, Chuck and Josh. This hypothetical has become real--I pick up the new truck on Friday. Good thing, too, because the rust on my old Nissan is bad enough that I am literally seeing pieces of rusted metal drop of the bed in my mirror now! Thule and Yakima both have bars with mounts that...

    Home from surgery

Dave, I have been off line for a while with vacation and then recovery from vacation at work. Very sorry to hear your wife needed this surgery, and very glad to hear she is home and doing well. Brain surgery is scary!

    Field & Stream

"Fame among duck hunters" is, in many ways, a big fish in a small pond situation, especially as hunter numbers are stable or decreasing as population keeps growing. ;)

    Quill, take two

Did you go this year? I went a week earlier than usual--came home last Saturday--and things were a little slow. Not much for hatches on the ponds--no evening rise after dinner and no trout sipping flying ants that blow out of the big pines. I did have a truly memorable day on one of the remote...
