    Decoy ID for the gurus

Hey Nick - did your BIL share any stories about his grandfather's hunts? I started hunting on L. Ontario in the early 80s and I remember clouds of blue bills on the lake. I would bet that those blocks saw a good amount of action If they could only talk~! Nice looking blocks.

    Season Dates stink

Anthony - I am on the other side of the state and hunt the Niagara River and while the dates are different, the experience is exactly the same. We get our birds after Long Point Ontario freezes up and we used to have dates that went into the second week of January. Not any more, and like you...

What's on the Bench? November 2021

A while back, someone posted about not needing anymore decoys so they were going to stop carving. GW jumped on the person and when I shared the same sentiment with GW, he jumped on me! So it took a while but I found a goal that is a bit different. I never paid a whole lot of attention to LL...

Fight It, Or Not? (Any Cops Here Feel Free To Weigh In. My feelings Won't Be Hurt If You Say I Deserve It)

I think everyone is missing the officer's true motivation here....he was obviously protecting HIS new hunting spot and didn't want Eric & Co building blinds. The chief may be his hunting partner and if I know anything about politics, the DA is his father in law and president of the Police Duck...

    Scaup 18 or Honker.

Brad, Your pic brought back a flood of memories. I started my teaching career in Cabarrus county and moved to York County, SC after grad school. My shop looked EXACTLY like yours! The Ag shop was on one side and the Auto shop on the other. We built scaled concrete canoes and a couple of...

    Alumacraft Ducker

Greg, I love the idea of making the better mouse trap so to speak. My suggestion is to reach out to Mark Rongers and ask him for his insights to the world of waterfowl boats. Mark brought several different kinds of boats to market and I would expect that he would have great insight as to what...

What is in your bag? December 2020

Not so much whats in the bag, but more of a celebration of Skye's career as a duck dog. She retires at the end of this season. She has some quality of life health issues and at 10, she has earned it. Each hunt is bitter sweet.

Looking for a Golden Retriever or Nova Scotia Toller, breeder recommendations needed

Check out Tony Zappia's North Coast kennel. I have had working goldens for 30 years now and I wouldn't hesitate getting a puppy from him. He is in Messena, NY. focusontheoutdoors.com

    BBSB ID

Looks like my boat. I always thought it was a derivative of a ZT Widgeon, but maybe not. It was framed out by a gentleman by the name of Bob Brown near Clayton, NY. He built these as "unfinished" boats and sold them in raw cedar. Mine has an after hatch, my cousin bought one without. Here is...

Bud Miles Barnegat Bay Sneak Box

That looks like a 1960s Johnson/Evinrude Sportstwin. I have had several on my BBSB in 9.5hp ratings. Very light weight motors, durable motors.

    LL Bean info...

Brent - looks like you found a nice garage sale stash! I am not a collector but I have looked at them on ebay. From what I have seen, they go $30-$60 USD, definitely more for unused blocks. I have never seen the bags, that is a nice find. My advice is keep and hunt them! Tom

ISO suggestions - anchoring a BBSB in open water, like laying out

This is exactly what I do as well. I first pull the aft anchor and put in the cockpit and then slowly motor forward - grab the float and detach. I go and pick up the bird and then motor back to the float, clip back in and let the wind push me tight. Then drop the aft anchor and wait for the...
