    Locating mercury ignition switch

I'm not all that familiar with modern mid range out outboards. My engines tended to be old iron. But couldn't you dispense with the key altogether and just put a "momentary ON" push button directly on your engine? I mounted one on the lower pan of an older Johnson. I had the electric start on...

Any experience with Flyway Specialties blinds?

A friend of mine has one and is happy with it, I'm looking for some more feedback. My boat is 12 ft long and this looks like it would be the ticket for a boat blind. This is the boat that I will be using it on.

    trailer bearing size

A point I would like to make is that you should be tearing down and repacking your bearings at the end of EACH season. I used to wait until spring to do mine, but found that if there was water intrusion, it would rust the bearings during the winter. Now I do it before putting it into storage and...

    epoxy mixing & rollers

Chris has it right, mixing by weight gives you more options when it comes to how much you want to mix. I have a digital scale and can mix an ounce if I wanted. My epoxy is 100:25 so the ration is real simple. Also, ditto on mixing resin and hardener before adding thickening agents. Good luck!

battery powered bow and stern light question

I never had good luck with the clamp on lights. I installed permanent lights on my boat and led everything to the back of the boat. I then terminated the wires with a two prong plug. I have a dry box with a tractor battery, it also has a 12v outlet for my spotlight. I made a lead out of it with...

How many in your hand carved rig?

Last season I had 40, all cedar or cork. I had to retire one due to a poorly aimed swat shot, and then several were lost to trades. I hope to have the same amount this year, I will displace some of my earlier creations with new and improved versions.

    ventless fuel tank

I have a new 9 gal for my Yamaha 60. I pulled the rubber valve out of the cap with some needle nose pliers. It seems to have cured the "problem". My tank is pretty tight where it sits, if it expanded, I would have a hard time refueling.

Here is an article concerning all of the ins and outs of thinning West System epoxy. http://www.epoxyworks.com/14/index14.html

    new fuel tank ?

I have a new 9 gal tank from Moeller. I believe the fill opening is larger that the old style, so I'd guess the vented caps will not fit. I could be wrong, but it looked a whole lot bigger. I'm just going to drill a small 1/16" hole it the cap. There, it's vented!

    Epoxy question.

John: Well, if that's good enough for you then I say go for it. Personally, if I was going to spend that much time on a boat, I would follow the directions. It the great scheme of things, how much are you really going to save? As a further explanation, epoxy is 100% solids, it combines and...

    Epoxy question.

I read this in some West System hand out some years ago. Do not use zylene to "cut" epoxy. Research it out. Zylene evaporates while epoxy cures through a chemical reaction. What happens is that the zylene will create channels or veins in the cured epoxy after it evaporates. This will compromise...

Cool new winch for my boat!

Chuck: Me? Sensitive? Nooooooo.....not me! LOL I'm just stayin' below the radar and carving duck like objects. Nothing very noteworthy. The winch (sometimes helped along by the wench) is mounted in place of traditional rope/strap winches. The advantage that I saw is that the bow line (possibly...

Cool new winch for my boat!

Thought this was a cool product that I would share: I saw this during the winter while dreaming about sunshine and beautiful windswept beaches. It's a trailer winch (called SkyWinch) that is based on a anchor windlass. Instead of dragging the strap off the winch and walking it out to the boat...

adding longevity to you head patterns....

Wouldn't it bbe easier to scan them onto your computer and print them out. Then just glue them directly on the wood. No need to trace anything and no degradation to the pattern. Just a thought....

    decoy patterns

My advice is to find a mentor to help you, at the very least with a few decoys. No sense in reinventing the wheel. A mentor will teach you what tools to buy and how to use them. Plus you will have insight into years of carving, your learning curve will be shortened considerably. After you get...

    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

George: I believe it was 1st Brant, 2nd Ross, 3rd Blue They had the 1st & 2nd place decoys lined up ready for BOS judging and one of the handlers tossed the wrong one in. It was caught before anything was even judged.

    Westlake....fun, yet confusing

George: The wrong goose (2nd) was mistakenly placed in BOS. It was pulled and the 1st place goose was judged.
