7" is a pretty good sized piece. I have had issues with the wood closing behind the blade and sticking the blade during big cuts as well. I use a wedge pushed into the cut line to ensure the blade doesn't become pinched and a sawdust trap.

Brad, I haven't seen Dan Butcher in a couple years, but he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I believe he lives in Strafford NH. I'm sure he would help out.

I have the best luck morning and just before sunset. Mostly in new growth,alders etc. with wet ground near. Look for the places you would dig for earthworms. Don't forget they migrate, so it's a "here today, gone tomorrow deal". Course there might be more the next day! Small shot, open...

I think Bob B. built a pair last year. If I remember correctly, he might be willing to do another. That failing, I could probably be talked into it if I could find a legible set of plans. Bob seems to be closer to you though.
