Welcome Wyatt! As long as you don't mind us old farts, you should fit right in.

    My new outboard came in.

I see a lot of Suzuki's on smaller work boats around here--clammers, small lobster boats, boats on oyster, mussel or seaweed aquaculture sites. Usually those folks are both price conscious and know enough to avoid motors that have problems. Happy with my new 6 hp, but I only have about 8 hours...

Check regs in GSMNP and the surrounding National Forests, too. I would not be surprised if a lot of it was Artificial Lures Only, but would if it was largely Fly Fishing Only. I last fished down there ~30 years ago, and did most of my fishing with a spinning rod.

    Canoe racks?

Two weeks since I last posted, and the saga continues. We did find the correct--and reasonably affordable solution I was looking for with a bed-mounted Adarac frame on one set of uprights with a 66" bar, and a cab mounted single Yakima bar with appropriate hardware to fasten to a 2024 Ranger...

    Epoxy Question

I just made some canoe repairs with RAKA epoxy using their medium epoxy and medium hardener. Working in 85-90 temps (not normal here, but it was when I could do the work), I found it a little on the thin side and the curing time to be really fast. I think you are right to go with slow...

    Canoe question

+1 on both themes above. Square stern canoes do not paddle well, but if you want to run one with a motor, you want a square stern. Side mounts for motors on canoes are an accident waiting to happen.

Add Slickrock Creek and Snowbird Creek, both outside the park. Pretty short hike (1 mile?) to the falls on Snowbird. And read Harry Middleton's "On the Spine of Time" while on the trip. One of the best senses of place I have ever gotten from a book.

    Bismuth Shot Size for Reloading

I don't reload, but I do shoot the BOSS bismuth shells. I've used both the 3" 1.5 oz and 2 3/4 1.25 oz loads. The 2 3/4 oz seem to perform a little better over decoys, maybe due to lower recoil. (Not that the recoil with the 3" is notably bad.) I shoot 5's in the early season for Teal and...

    Canoe racks?

Moose numbers are way down these days. Still plenty of them for a lottery draw hunt with a pretty high rate of success, but a combination of changes in forest management, climate change, and the related emergence of winter tick in much larger numbers to reduce calf survival in their first...

    Canoe racks?

Well, it's taken a while--and that's killing me in fishing season prime time--but I did end up with a combination of a roof bar from Yakima and a pair of rails with one set of uprights and crossbar for the bed. It took a surprising amount of back and forth to confirm that both will fit a 2024...

    Did you guys know....

Hell, you all are making feel young having only been hanging around for 15 years.

NDR but it is hunting related

Two questions. (1) What is the effective range of a crossbow for deer-sized game? (2) Are crossbows allowed during "archery" seasons in your state, or is there a separate crossbow license/season? Crossbows are now legal during archery seasons, as well as during the "firearms" season, but...

    Yet another wader question

The dark room/light inside the waders is the best way to find leaks, large or small. Even pin-prick holes and leaks along the seams show up. Circle with a sharpie, and coat with aquaseal or your goo of choice.

Very Interesting Documentary on Louisiana Coastal Habitat Loss

A great read on this subject--and on other large scale engineering projects around the world--is John McPhee's "The Control of Nature." One of the major chapters is on the lower Mississippi River. And of course there is the classic "Life on the Mississippi" by Mark Twain, with this fabulous...

    Grumman Sport Boat Update

I'm contemplating no mods except for an anchor roller off the bow and beefing up the soft plywood motor boards. Plus paint. A drain plug would be nice--anyone have a link to a good way to do it?

The old outboard is on its way out.

Google works--they have a video! Looks like just 4 bolts and nuts per rail.

The old outboard is on its way out.

Looks like they do have one that fits a 2024 Ranger--and available as a single bar to pair with a roof rack. I'm sure this differs vehicle to vehicle, but how do the rails mount to the bed?

The old outboard is on its way out.

I feel your pain. I have a new truck; my old canoe rack will not fit it; and nobody has yet designed a rack that will fit. I can find roof bars, but no clamp on racks for the bed. It's trout, shad and striper season . . . .

    Whatcha Listening To?

Stevie Ray Vaughn was the first concert I ever attended. He was opening for the Moody Blues, who had a comeback album with a radio hit out at the time. None of us had ever even heard of Stevie. Completely stole the show from the headliners, playing solo to a bunch of Maine teenagers and aging...

    Devlin’s Mallard Build

Ash is the traditional gunwale wood for canoes. Hard, bendable, pretty rot resistant if you keep it oiled or varnished.
