Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

Matthias That all makes sense and sure looks like a robust way of doing things. I'm not seeing short cuts. I see well thought execution. FYI, a cleat is simply a board scabbed on to another to act at an attachment point or rest.

List Updated 2/23/2026 This podcast drives home the issues facing waterfowl populations and migrations and experts in the field provide a lot of information showing that flooded corn is in the noise in terms of population impact.

Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

I've never seen an angled cut like that where the front deck meets the sides. Intriguing. I always cut it straight and overlapped the deck pieces right over the top of the bulkhead, sometimes adding a cleat underneath for more contact area. What is this approach?

54th Annual Long Island Decoy & Sporting Collectables Show Event March 7, 2026

Steve Those are amazing photos. I bet your "150 Years of Long Island Goose Hunting" presentation has all kinds of interesting information and stories. Hopefully those of us not able to attend will get to see some of the photos.

Dave I would love to give these to hunting partners. Please let me know when you start selling. Awesome idea.

One thing I do for rear flotation compartments is to put thick backing blocks wherever screws are sunk to mount hardware. I think loose unsealed screws let water in. I size the screw as not to break through the block and into the compartment. This way should water ever get past the 5200 and...

    End of year clean up

In this case the bumper was replaced on my old work/hunting Tacoma and the body shop guy rewired the socket but for some reason didn't wire in the ground. I am like you in that I'm not into tech trucks either. I've come to the conclusion it is better, at least for me, to buy a base model and...

Good book! Waterfowl DECOYS of Michigan and the Lake St. Clair Region (and a great museum)

Boy, that bobtail bluebill is about as eye pleasing a decoy can get. At least to me. The plates in Barber's book show the detail of construction. The shelf the head sits on isn't something I see replicated these days. The book goes over the details and says the body is mortised and the base...

    End of year clean up

Justin I'm glad you posted this because it reminded me the ground wire on my truck trailer wiring is missing. When I plug the trailer lights in there is no ground which means the only source of ground is the ball which makes the trailer lights flicker. I need to fix that but it will probably...

    2025 Devlin Snow Goose Thread

@Matthias I use similar deck plates on my Brant. They have a couple issues. 1) The threads get sand/dirt in them making them very difficult to remove. I keep them as clean as possible and made a wrench to open them. I only hand tighten them. The wrench has lugs that fit into the...

Somehow the term freelance in your vernacular has a different meaning than mine. Simply put freelancing is hunting public lands on your own accord, no guide. Here is what AI has to say about the meaning of the term. Freelance hunting is an, often public-land, DIY approach where hunters travel...

William I think in this centralized specific situation the public hunters should probably organize and enter into agreements with landowners more favorable than the agreements the guides make with them. I don't know. Not an easy answer and it sucks for freelancers like myself.

Ben I think if I apply your logic then if someone who owned private land allowed no hunting at all and managed their property for wildlife building huge numbers of waterfowl you would have to make the same argument. That is to say they are controlling a public resource and not allowing you...

Ben I'm not trying to disagree because I very much feel the sport is getting lopsided in favor of guide services to the detriment of avg. joe access. What are the ways they lock you or me out of the land? Now I understand laws can be passed that limit non-resident hunting and getting a guide...

Tod & SJ Would my hunting improve if guides were banned? Around here there are no guide services to speak of but I do think the average joe hunter who lives in a waterfowl rich area would have far better hunting opportunity were guide services not around. But that would also eliminate someone...

Tod & others Do you feel those that profit from hunting should pay taxes beyond income tax? For example oil, mining, and even renewable energy companies pay for public resources. So do trucking and freight companies though highway vehicle use taxes. The list of examples goes on and on. I...

Let me add a quick point to the DU discussion going on. When Manitoba made it known they intended place heavy restrictions on non-citizens hunting ducks there DU was vocal in their support of the US hunter and our loss of opportunity. They were definitley standing up for the hunter in this...

It was me that posted that video. In that instance I was discussing how the drama and adrenaline of the race is what is attracting participation, not hunting. I think posting who is breaking the law on their quest for income via sponsorship is a wonderful idea for the simple reason waterfowl...
