Building an Aluminum BBIII - what modifications would you make circa 2017

Yes, I liked the motor well too and there were no problems after taking the inside corners off.

Building an Aluminum BBIII - what modifications would you make circa 2017

On my BBIII I had a problem with the outboard hitting the inner corners of the sponsons. It occurred when the motor was turned full left or right and raised for shallow water. That was with an Evinrude 25HP 2 stroke. I suspect a larger engine would be more likely to contact the sponsons. If...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

No skeg Steve, but I added a keelson down the centerline. I noticed on my last trip out that the back end seemed to wiggle a bit but I wasn't able to decide if it was the boat or me. It may be something for the future.

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

I don't have the scales to weigh it but I can load and unload it from my pickup by myself.

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

So with time for a few test runs before our season starts I finished out the Sunfish conversion with paint, canvas, oars, and accessories. I patterned the mini dodger with some scrap canvas. The bow is a piece of plastic electrical conduit. The dodger was...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

So after a hiatus for the worst of the summer heat I'm back to work on the Sunfish. I added some doublers of 3/4 plywood traps to the bulkheads to add some gluing surface for the deck. After prepping the surfaces one more time I used generous amounts of 3M 5200 and set the back...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

Steve, I found it in the kitchen. I think it was Glad. If you take time to squeegee it smooth it leaves a really nice finish on Epoxy.

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

Yesterday, my free time and good weather happened on the same day so I was able to get out and work on the Sunfish some. In March the hull was left with 2 fresh coats of paint and ready to deck. I planned to deck with 1/4" plywood but the original fiberglass decking was...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

The last 2 weeks have seen limited progress due to rain, cold weather, and my work schedule. I didn't do an update but I was able to do some sanding on the hull and to get the the first coat of fairing compound. I used thickened epoxy to glue the rub strip to the keel. Some scrap...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

Sorry James. Not much of an update this week. Rain has kept me in the house. Next week should show some progress though

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

So this week I worked on getting the structural stuff done inside the hull. I used some 1/2" ply I had around the shop to cut out the bulkheads and quarter knees. The stations are set at 18" plus or minus whatever it takes to make it work. I used cardboard to make templates...

    Sunfish to Gunning Boat Conversion

I hunt puddlers in the early season, then switch over to divers when they show up in late December. Diving ducks are relatively new here. Maybe it is the proliferation of Zebra Mussels in the lakes . Very few hunters here target divers. We don't have the lovely boats, decoys, and traditions you...

    1966 Crestliner North Star project

I've used both in boats that I've built or re-built. I don't like poured in as you can't inspect the areas under the foam once it is poured. I'm guessing your going to screw or glue some 3/4" ply over the top of the foam so your probably not going to be inspecting until that plywood goes bad...

    1966 Crestliner North Star project

I ordered some 2-part from Raka that I'm going to pour tomorrow. One thing I noticed is that it needs to be a least 75 degrees to get maximum expansion. That might be an issue for you're if your wanting to get it done soon and you are working outside.

    Tragic story

The missing hunter was found today. According to news reports he died of hypothermia and was found on land, some distance away from the water. You always think if you make it out of the water you win, but you also need to be prepared to survive the cold.

    Tragic story

Temps were in the low 30s with a 30-45 MPH wind from the north. I haven't heard what type of boat they were in. One of the news reports said they weren't wearing PFDs.

Devlin Black Brant 3 build - motor suggestions

I ran a short shaft Evinrude 25HP on the one I built a few years ago. The performance was very good with top speed in the low 30's with a load. I had to cut the inside corners off the motor well to get the full turning range on the motor when it was tilted up for shallow water. I would stay...
