1st boat Project

I picked the hull of this boat from Craig's list last summer. Had no idea how to lay glass or anything related to boat fabrication although I knew what I wanted and had a little wood working experiance so off I started. I hunted last January for sea ducks, what a blast hunting out of these boats, especially when it's your sweat that makes them float. Hope you enjoy.

Looks like a successful conclusion to your journey! From the pictures, the boat sure looks to me like it started life as a Zack Taylor Wigeon...

Thanks Dewayne, I wonder what the hull was modeled after, looks like you could be right, either way the boat sure goes nice through the water. Really looking forward to this season.

Troy,
project looks good and the shot of the hunt is a big reward for the hard work.

Did you paddle in or pole? Are you thinking about a motor or are you able to hunt with human power only?

Never seen a combing finished like that. Did you have another one to go off of or come up with it from your own experience?

Thanks for the pictures of the hull before and after, and again, nice restart of a project from a back burner.

Bob

Hi Bob, I actually row it. I ran a piece of 5/4 x 6 P.T. decking from the bow headboard back to the stern board, added a backer piece and then drilled a hole down through for my oar lock. By doing this it also created some external storage space.

I didn't have any design that I followed, truth be known, I probably have as many hours just looking at boat and thinking of my next step as I do in production. The decking is just 1/4 luan and one layer of glass over that, it is supported pretty well underneath both forward and aft to carry items and such. The hull appears to be 3/8 plywood and I put two layers of glass over that. Of course I did all this BEFORE finding this site or doing any real digging of information about sneak boats, so I'm pleased with the results. I am thinking of adding the stern rail boards of a BBSB and also a dodger and then I think I will call it complete.

Thanks for the kind words.

p.s. For now I'm not considering a motor, I really enjoy rowing it, however a couple cripple chasing adventures may change my mind.

Troy, I scanned the Zack Taylor Wigeon plans from his book, "Successful Waterfowling". Take a look at these and I think you'll understand why I think that is what your boat originally was...

Thank you for sharing those pictures and your story of finishing that fine boat. It looks great. I was right there with you for a moment, watching those birds swing around downwind....got me daydreaming for sure.

Troy, Dwayne is exactly right. I built one of these boats many years ago from these same plans. Lots of fun and and great to hunt out of too. Good luck.
