20" or 15" transom on Duck Boss 13?

Hi. I'm about to order a Duck Boss 13 and have the option of the Standard 20" transom(long shaft) or for a additional $500.00, I can order it with a 15" transom which would fit a short shaft outboard. I will be purchasing a outboard once I decide on the transom height I'm going with. Curious what everyone recommends? Pros/cons ?
Thank you in advance for any replies.

So from what I've heard, the 20" transom only makes sense if you already have a long shaft motor already. Otherwise, the motor sits a bit higher, sticks out more, and just is not needed. I saw pictures of one with a long shaft/20" transom and the top of the motor cowling was almost to the top of the flaps. So this is a con.

I believe all of my buddies with the old Duck Invader 13, which is the same boat, have the 15". I have the 15" as well.

The one thing I will say, used motors seem to be long shafts by a 2:1 ratio. Especially in the 25hp range. Reason being, a lot are sailboat kicker takeoffs or came off a high transom lake boat or jon boat. I went through a lot of listings trying to find a short shaft 25hp 2 stroke. That's the only pro.

If you are going to buy something like a new Yamaha or Mercury, just go with the 15" transom and order a short shaft. Much more compact setup. That's what I ended up doing. I have a 3 year old short shaft Yamaha 25hp on mine.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking.

The only downside really, is with the 15" transom, on the Yamaha 25, the tilt lever is buried under there with the motor up. It's hard to describe but when the motor is locked all the way up, it's very difficult to access. My only gripe really. I am not sure where Mercury puts theirs.

I have the 15" transom on my Duck Invader just because I already had a short shaft, and short shafts make more sense to me on a low profile duck boat. I agree with what Jay K said

FWIW I have a Suzuki 20 4 stroke. Works well, and my buddy had it for sale

Go with the 15”. My dad just ordered his he went with the 15”. I only got the 20” because it was the only boat they had on hand at the time. But the 15” is better

I've been looking at them. As if I need another boat. Boats are like nice firearms, more is never enough. :D I would like the 15" transom as well. I can't get past the part about them cutting 5" off the transom for an upcharge. Both the surgery and the fee are offensive to me.

Yes and the cockpit cap is extra money too, but I’m happy with mine.

What was the charge for the cap? And do you happen to have any pictures of it? Thank you
I think he is referring to the hard cover... which it doesn't look like 4Rivers offers anymore. One of the best add-on's I purchased (since I store my boat outside under some trees... also keeps the snow out). Although it's not on the website, I'd ask if they make one... it's worth it. In the pic of the boat on the trailer you can see it. (Hard Cover was $350 when I bought it in 2020)

My boat is the Duck Invader version. I see the consensus is 15" and I don't have any meaningful reason to disagree. So just as an FYI, my boat has the 20" transom with a Yamaha F25 (bought new for the boat in 2020). Here are some additional pics of the boat in the water (no motor cover since at the dock). As you can see (as Jay mentioned) the motor does come up close to being even with the top of the flappers, so the 15 will sit even lower. I don't mind it being so high, and actually with the motor cover on it and a grass mat on the raised tiller handle, I think it actually provides some cover for the back where there is no flapper... but does it really make any difference... probably not.

I believe it was 250$. No pictures of it but it’s all fiberglass and fits well. It does not lock in. I will have to fabricate something to lock it in

As others have mentioned the 13’ is a sweet rig! I’ve always thought of it as a
“Modern Day SouthBay Double-Wide” similar ride, style and layout yet lighter. Perfect for the marsh with that low profile. Broc did a nice job on these..
