28 gauge steel wads

I think your research is accurate. The best alternate so far has been the HV28 from Ballistic products though those of us using it are using for Hevi-shot. I understand that it 'may' pinhole somewhat. I don't know of anyone who is loading steel into a 28 ga hull and haven't run across any recipes either. If you do decide to wildcat a load I would suggest getting it pressure tested. Precision Reloading does it as well as a couple of others I believe.

Pete is right.Ballistic Products has a 28 ga wad fo steel.I couldn't find loadind data anywhere. The reply from Alliaint powder, was sorry,no data.Macks Prairie Wings has two Bizmuth loaded shells listed.Get the 3/4oz #6s.Lee has loaded some with Hevi-Steel.Find out what he used for hulls, wads, powder, and primer.

Pete and Joe O:
Midwayusa sent me 28 hulls and what they said were steel wads. They came today and the wads are 12 gauge, calling them they apologized and said they didn't have steel wads for 28. They referred me to BPI and they said to call tomorrow and speak to a Dave but to their knowledge they didn't have steel wads for 28. I've talked to Ballistics, Alliant etc.. I'm going in circles at the present time. Pete, how did your Mississippi hunt go? My son got into the big northern ducks (mallards) on a private pond around the Portage area over the weekend. Joe O your still waiting for your opening and wish you good shooting. Geez, the shipping cost on this stuff is unreal.

Joe,

Lee has been loading Hevi-shot not Hevi-steel. Also, BP does NOT have a steel wad for the 28 ga.. They have a Magnum wad for the 28 called the HV28. It might work for steel just as it does for Hevi-shot but I don't know of anyone loading it with steel.

Jim,

Friday we tried a spot that has been hot on occasion - it wasn't that day and in fact only shot at one duck before noon. We picked up and moved about 25 miles and were set up again about 1:30 and managed to get 4 before closing time. Sat we limited but it took until 2pm. On the way in Sat afternoon I fried my water pump so had to walk in on Sunday morning. Never fired a shot until we picked up at 10. We saw lots of ducks but they appeared quite content to hang with their brethren and mostly ignored us - looked to me that we were hunting 'old' ducks. Crossing my fingers for some weather this week to bring some fresh birds in.
Pete

Your right Pete.I meant ,Lee has loaded Hevi-shot,and BP has a magnum 28ga wad HV28 that could work.I haven't found any loading data for the 28 other than Bizmuth, and the shot is not to be had.Mack's Prairie Wings has Bizmuth loads(maybe)listed.

Pete:
Evidently duck movement South on the Mississippi will depend on rough weather. I'm headed North to my son's cabin for rifle hunting. Next week I'll read some of your and Joe O former posts on loading 28 gauge and get with it. The weather this week end does look like a change.
Jim

Joe O:
I'll go back and read some of your posts on loading 28--I think you've answered my question several times but I'm a little slow getting it?? Got a P.T. appointment this morning at 7 and then final pack up for the North country yiiiiiiihaaaa!

I just returned from Nevada and a swan/canvasback hunt with Norm Saake, a retired waterfowl biologist. Norm is an avid 28 bore shooter--for everything, including swans. He loads steel for his 28s. In fact he gave me a box to try on my last day (I used my 12 the first two for the swans), and I smoked a mallard drake at about 35-40 yards. The loads were steel number 7. Norm also loads Hevi-shot number 9 for cripples. You might want to check with him about wads. His email is: saake@oasisol.com. His home phone is: 775 867 2198. W. Mathewson

The only load I've seen with steel for the 28 is with 7 shot. Any bigger and you can't get the weight needed to promote full combustion of your powder. Whacked two big mallards today with the 28 and Hevi Shot. limp as dishcloths at 30 yards or so and that was with my barrel that has no choke. These are 7/8 oz and I'd say they kick just less than a 20 ga 1oz load. Cracked and chipped my buttstock where the metal and wood come together but that was my fault for not paying attention to the inletting when I put an 1100 stock on my old 11-48.

Lee,we are looking for your load data with the #7 steel or Hevi-shot.Hull,wad,primer,powder.Wis boz needs to get set up for his new SxS.Thanks

Well....it's not MY load and I feel a bit squeemish about giving out and unpublished load. The Hevi load I absolutely won't give out till I have a season of personal experience..plus I have no control over others reloading experience or technique. The loads have to be hand weighed..both powder and shot on GOOD scales. I'll tell you this much...the hulls are win AAHS, the wads are BPHV28, the filler is BP#47 and a 28ga overshot card and win 209 primer..the powder for the 383gr of hevi is h110 or w296. I am going to start putting in a mythin mylar wrap next time I load up a batch. These are not to be shot in chokes tighter than Imp cyl and I'd be leary about shooting steel or hevi through a SxS or O/U unless the factory says you can. I'm not trying to be a prick here..that's Steve's job and the union won't allow me...just don't want someone hurting their gun and most importantly..themselves..these are wildcat loads.

If'n yor gunna be a Sport and try to shoot a danged 28 bore at ducks...'sted of a 12 bore like ya supposed ta, then just load that SOB 28 with 3/4 ounce of number 6 lead shot 'n roll teh dice on not havin' steel.

Ya see..........this Old Cowboy feels that the Fine$ would be a heluva lot cheaper than trying to find all the stuff (that ain't out there anyways) tp load 28 bore dcuk loads.

The 28 twern't made fer shootin' ducks no-how. but it's a hell of a gun fer shootin' flushing quail. WAGH!

Boy, you can tell Dave isn't from Wisconsin....where they are trying to make misdemeaners a cause for no gun ownership. Just heard this on the phone this morning from a resident there. Unbelievable....

Not surprising to what ends "they" will go to get the guns away from honest citizens, and let the criminals plea bargain the crime, with a gun, away, for a lighter sentence.

The Old Cowboy may have something there.BWAAAaaaaa
