Well I made it back from 40 plus miles of paddling along with numerous portages! It rained everyday during the trip. Some days it rained more other days it rained less. Didn't make much difference, we just went on about things in the rain.

Just the four of us for this trip so we each used solo kayaks.

It is beautiful country up there. We started our trip going upstream on the Nina Moose River.

Some of the portages can be full of boulders but most weren't too bad. They varied in length from 20 rods up to 160 rods (1/2 mile).

This is my boat, a 12 foot Old Town Loon kayak.

These two pictures are from one of our overnight camps. Looking to the North was this view,

and to the South was this view.

We kept moving along to a new camp site about every other day which kept things interesting. I was the only fisherman in the group, so it was my duty to catch supper for us. Tough job but somebody had to do it.

They all didn't get ate but they all didn't get released either! Nothing like a fresh mess of fish.

Saw some mighty fine scenery all along the trip. These photos are of a spot in Canada called "Warrior Hill".

Story behind the name is that the young Indian braves would jump off these cliffs into the water below, to prove their manhood. The pictures don't show it too well but we were guessing it was about a five story jump.

Ducks were in abundance but didn't have the camera out as much as I would have like to, due to all the rain.

I'd like to get back up there again but it will probably have to wait till next year.

I've been to the Boundary Waters many times and it is one of my favorite destinations.

Those pictures bring back many fond memories.

Dave,
That's a trip I've always wanted to make but never seem to make happen. It looks like you all had an awesome time up there. Sorry to hear taht you had to handle all of the fishing WORK. Thanks for posting the pictures!

Dave,
Somehow I keep on expecting you to be pushing the limits of your surroundings. Nice to see that you are still catching bigger fish than your companions. Laurie and I still talk about your trip here to our cabin and stomping grounds in Talkeetna, Alaska. We had a blast! Your King Salmon was indeed bigger than mine that day. You are a special guy and a great companion in the woods. Thanks for sharing your latest trip out there with all of us!

Jesse,

Thank you for having me. You and Laurie made me feel right at home. I certainly enjoyed my stay there and it would be nice to return some time. Nice to hear from you, please post some pictures when your duck season rolls around, should be soon, right?

Looks like it was a relaxing trip, rain and all.

Yep, I found out a long time ago that I won't melt in the rain. :>) :>) Actually the cooler wetter weather probably made it easier to go longer between lake baths. Seems you always end up smelling like fish after a bath using lake water.

Awesome Dave....

I had a trip planned this year to the Quetico but can not take it do to work load the first week of September...I have been going up there every year since the late 90s...A truly, beautiful place...Never been on the Boundary Waters in the US side...I am sure it is just as wonderful experience...Glad to see the pictures of the region...Unfortunately I am out this year...

Something to look into:
I built a Kayak about 5 years ago from a kit by Pygmy Boats out of Washington State...It is the Coho...You might look into that...I notice you were having to portage with a plastic kayak...That boat of mine is 17 feet long and weighs 38 pounds...It has ample room for a month trip...I spent 10 days in it two years ago...It paddles like a dream...

Regards,

Kristan

Dave, glad to hear your trip went well. I remembered you had mentioned you set-up a sleeping bunk in bed of truck w/ cap on on it. You wouldn't happen to have any pics? My son, buddy and I are going to Cody, WY After mulies ( 3- 6' footers in extend cap f150 gets tight) and I was thinking of doing the same, to strecth out on for the ride out.

Thanks,
Gene

Kristan,

When I purchased this boat I had to strike a balance between desire and budget. I did want a boat that I could handle on portages. This one at 52 lbs. just squeeks in two pounds over my self imposed limit. My pack and gear came in at 55 lbs for the trip. Most portages were made doing two trips (pack first, followed by kayak).

The lightest Kayak was actually also the longest, 16 foot by 36 lbs. The heaviest was 14 foot by 65 lbs. I use my kayak a lot for fishing the local rivers and as you know a plastic boat will take an awfull lot of abuse. If I could afford the investment and storage space for a nice touring kayak, I'd love to own one. I may look into it further, one can always dream. :>)

Gene,

I'll try to get some pictures and post them up for you tonight or tomorrow night. Your body will certainly rest better on a bunk like this rather than half slumped in the cab seat. I speak from experience.

I was envious when I saw your post about departing for BWCA.

Thanks for sharing the pics!!

FWIW, I was camping from June 29 to Aug 1, so I got rained on quite a bit too.

Did you see enough ducks to consider hunting there? Anything other than Goldys and Mergs? See any Wild Rice?

I've always wanted to hunt ducks in the BWCA, and I'm not to far away these days.

Thanks again for sharing!

If you do go, better practice up with your bow, firearms are not allowed in the BWCAW. I can't say what the hunting restrictions may be, but firearms are a no-no.

Thanks Dave, My back and I thank you in advance. Whenever you get time, I have tons of stuff going on w/ boats & dekes.

Thanks again
Gene,

Dave,

I haven't been paddling there in the last 4 years, but before that there was never a firearms restriction. Is that a new rule??? They (forestry service folks) used to ask if you were "carrying" but after MN got the right to carry law they couldn't ask any more. As far as I know you can carry for "protection" and all hunting seasons are by MN laws and covered by MN C.O.s I'll do some digging on that.

Oh, and did you notice "it's so beautiful up there that even an IA boat looks good." ;^)

FIREARMS AND FIREWORKS
Discharging a firearm is prohibited within 150 yards of a
campsite, occupied area, and in a manner or location that places
people and their property at risk or danger.
State game laws apply in the BWCAW.

George, Carl and others,

I stand corrected on the firearms restriction. I'm pretty sure we were asked if we had any firearms and we were given the impression that firearms were not allowed. Either that or the officer just ran everything together when he also asked about fireworks ( which ARE prohibited).

Carl,

Obviously the above quote is not the legal language of the law but,,,,,,,,,,, If one is standing in the middle of the woods and discharging a firearm,,,,,,,,,,, is not that area by definition "occupied"? (occupied by the shooter) I'd bet one could find at least one judge that could be persuaded to rule against hunting by using a twisted interpretation of the quoted regulation.

Yeah Dave, when we've gone through the "test" I've had several people kind of run the guns/fireworks thing together. I'm guessing that it weeds out the people who think they need protection out there. The 150 yd and campsite definition have always been there. I've been under the assumption that you better have bite marks on your butt if you pull the trigger and I think that keeps most people from carrying. Sides, in 30 plus trips I've only seen one bear and she was carrying a micky Ds bag off into the woods at the trails end campground. It's not the critters we need protectin from out there!!! :^0

Especially when you get northern slime all over yourself. Why are you eating northerns when the walleyes are thick as snot up there?

Enjoyed the pics!
