After letting most subscriptions lapse

I think I've found one worth reading. Fine Woodworking is the only active subscription I have. But when you get down to it, like so many others, it has become a "how-to" pub and largely lacks any exploration of the soul. All the others are gone, including Wildfowl which became a bad reiteration of itself, issue after issue. After several trips to the barber shop spanning several months I've found a magazine that repeatedly fills the compositional void for an outdoorsmen who dabbles in wood, game, fish, and Southern culture. As the boys get their hair cut I scan the magazine and soon find casual flipping changes to pleasure reading. A delight that seldom happens. If you think you might be interested in a magazine that covers a vast array of Southern outdoor experiences then pick up an issue of http://gardenandgun.com/ . I think you will see there are some well written articles that tell life experiences which go far beyond the "go here, have the latest whatever, and do it this way" articles we are bombarded with. Technical reading it is not. Charming it is.

I have to buy into that also but do we Northern guys need Southern culture? :)

Jim, short answer no, any doubt...

Sorry, couldn't resist. All kidding aside, looks like a good publication. It's unfortunate how all the media these days is all about selling and not about stimulating the mind. For as much ad content that is in most magazines (not just ads, but that articles that are just dressed up ads) they should be giving the magazines away! Everytime I buy a magazine I later regret wasting the money. Maybe I should get back to the barber and see if he has a good selection now...it has been 7 years, maybe he has some new ones.

Archery mags are notorious for having articles that are more ads for the latest in bowhunting technology. It's no wonder it's such a huge industry with $1000 bows and high tech carbon arrows and such. Maybe thats why I quit archery hunting years ago.

I agree the more basic and no frills an article is the more I enjoy it...keep it to the basics.

Oh and I love those overalls..

If you guys like garden and gun- please show them some support. Word is that their publisher dropped them despite large ad sales. I believe they are currently looking for a new publisher. Hopefully they'll pull through.

"Southern Culture". Now there is an oxymoron. I think us Northern Boys can teach some true culture to our southern counterparts.

Couldn't resist.

Eric,
I have also let all of my hook and bullet mag subscriptions lapse with the exception of Traditional Bowhunter. I think it is without a doubt the best hunting mag out there. I enjoy the many articles that are written by regular guys who are not whoring products. It is refreshing to read stories celebrating the hunt itself, even if the writer never gets to stick an arrow in the critter he is hunting.
I will have to check out your recommendation.

Garden & Gun is a great magazine. I recently subscribed and have recommended it to many folks.

As for the picture above, well...what can I say? I'm just waiting on Sutton's comments now...

Jon, I noticed the smile on your face. I'm jealous you can play the violin. I use to go to Blue Grass festivals and always enjoyed the fiddling. Some thing about that make you want put on colorful pants. Another note___ If your big enough__ You can wear any thing you want....and guys like Steve arn't going say a word.

Funny to come across this article especialy when I just received my issue of WILDFOWL today 2/4/09 issued on Nov.of 2008 Vol.23, No 7 ,with articles of not to vote for obama because mandates on gun reg. It's like reading last months news today .Whats with Wildfowl. I like some of the articles and hate to drop them . But if they can't get ther sub's out on time I will let my subcription run out. Does any one else have this problem?

I never renewed my Wildfowl either. I'm considering subscribing to a decoy magazine since that is my latest hobby. Anyone recommend one?

Southern culture we here in Jersey could probably do without but Southern values, now that is something that we need. I have not met many disrespectful southerners..............Kevin

Kevin,

Sadly you are right. I hunt with a friend in south-western Virginia for deer/turkey. It took several trips to get used to how friendly, polite, helpfull... EVERYONE is. Us northerners can be a little cold shouldered sometimes. It's a shame.

Having lived in the south all my life...umm, South Dakota... well I read a couple articles online last night and I found it to be just what you said, charming. I also liked that what I read didn't seem to be over the heads of us poor unfortunate Yankees.

Strange assortment of ads on the site but they seem to make perfect sense with the subject.

Garden and Gun is good mag and has given a few friends of mine an idea for another southern style mag. that we will name "Bathrooms and Beavers"

Look for it soon..............
