i have had enough from that mercury i bought a few months ago so im thinking about buying a new suzuki 15hp 4 stroke. there only 97 lbs, so there arn't terribly heavy i also dont want another used headache. the website has them for 2300 with free shipping. i was just wondering if anyone has dealt with them for a motor. i have bought parts from them and every transaction went as planned.

Thanks, Chris

Its not boats.net but I bought my Nissan from Cabelas back in '98, same deal, free shipping. I had no problems with the shipping.

I just bought a 15 hp Suzuki EFI from newoutboards.com. I could not be happier. Showed up in 3 days. I opted for the electric start still weighing in at 106# I had to put on a 11" pitch prop as I was hitting the rev limiter. With a new prop my Higbee avererages 27 -28 mph. Unbelievable for a four stroke.

It idles rough and after its warm it wont hit powerband i rebuilt the carb and gave it new plugs. It getsplenty of spark so its a fuel issue im just done with it

Chris,

Buy the maintenance manual and a carb rebuild kit and take care of it. I had never taken an outboard motor apart and had a similar problem with a 9.9 Merc. I was able to do it without any problems. You'll be surprised.

While you are at it, I would change the impeller too if it hasn't been done.

You can knock this all out in a weekend.

That Mercury is a good motor. You shouldn't give up on it yet. At the very least take it to a mechanic and pay him to fix it. I would think that would be cheaper than buying a new engine?

chris i had the same problem with my 25 merc i rebuilt the carb twice still had the problem the switch box or powerpak what ever you want to call it was going bad it controls alot of things timming, spark etc. you might want to look into it good luck clark

Chris,

I won't try to talk you of a new purchase but those Merc 15's are great little motors. I really like the twist to reverse function and the shallow runing feature. They have to be setup right though. I'f you have a couple of bucks in your pocket I'd take it to the shop and have a mechanic got though it. Just my 2 cents.

Chris-I'm with most others here. I have a 97 9.9, which is virtually the same motor with a different carb, and it is a great motor and should run for many more years. With that motor you are better off taking it to a Mercury mechanic. If it is electrical you will have tough time with it on our own, but I am sure that if you can find out what is wrong and fix it you will have a great motor. Mine starts with one pull(one easy pull).

Ditto, Chris
That's a great motor. Can't imagine that shelling out for a new 15 would be a better idea than getting it to a reputable shop.

Chris. I have a 99 25 Merc, keep it up at my place in North Dakota. A couple of years ago it started running real bad. Hard starting , no power, last trip I ran all the way in with the choke half way out. Wasnt looking forward to driving 70 miles to the nearest outboard shop. Just by chance I stuck my nose in the tank, Wow! terrible! dumped a couple gallons that were left in my truck[Fords will run on anthing] Put fresh gas in my outboard tank, with a little Stabil now, has run like new ever since.
