April 2014 - What is on your workbench ?

Roy, I love the feather carving on those woodies.

Steve, great lines on that bluebill.

I've been working on a few blue wings and getting my spoonie pattern in order. I'll have to post up some pics in the next few days.

Also, I know there are more decoys being made on Lake Gogebic than we are being shown...where are the GE's Brandon?

My bench is covered in decoys but these made it outside today to carve under the mango tree. A BWT pair and a ring neck drake.

Here is another card holder - first Specklebelly I have carved. It's oil on basswood and will be headed south later today.

All the best,

Cork body, tupelo head, painted in oils

Harlequin was drawn off my own pattern, second pattern Ive ever made and second bird carved off a home-made pattern.
Long story behind this bird,
White cedar head, laminate hollowed cypress body painted in oils

I've been messing around with this cork stand up black duck for a few days...

Tonight i cleaned it up, burnt the cork, and made a base from a cedar 6x6 leftover.

Coating on the anchors didn't turn out too badly. Certainly close enough for government work, and these anchors will do just fine.
The Plasti-dip dries to a uniform surface. Kind of surprising, considering you'd think that something hung vertically to dry would really end up uneven. So in the end the dip was way more economical and less time consuming than the spray would've been.
Brandon - If you consider doing this, you'll want to have all your anchors rigged with mono and whatever drying hanger & area you'll use all set up before you start the process. That way you can get right through all you need to do without the dip in the tray coagulating on you. Not much waste at all.

I already had a bunch of these anchors that were commercially made and which I really like. Those have a green rubberized coating. Don't see them offered any longer.

I have used Plasti-dip coating on strap anchors for about a decade, if you can't get black, blue and yellow mixed yields a nice marsh green. Naptha is the thinner of choice. Thin coats via multiple dippings works best. DO NOT try the spray. It doesn't hold up and it jams prior the exhaustion of the can's contents.

Bill, I like the stand up Black. My buddy and I have been toying with the idea of doing some widgeon for the lower Columbia like that. If I can find the time hopefully I will get to it.
