April what's on you workbench? No fooling

Pat, I'm jealous! It's taken me two weeks to carve the hen I'm working on...of course I carve at my kitchen table with a couple of knives...a fully equiped woodshop would probably help with efficiency! Cheers, Abe.

Brandon - I'll post up some more on the stamp. Lou Tisch would also be familiar with it.

Abe - Sounds like I need to come up to your place during hunting season and help you design a carving shop... ;)

Pat...I suppose if you insisted on coming during hunting season...which seems rather strange to me...you should probably bring a few of those nice blocks of yours so we can see how they float...and if they float well, well then maybe we should whack us a couple ducks over them...and I suppose if we were to kill us some ducks we should probably grill them up on the spit...and if we were to do some grilling we should probably enjoy some fine homebrewed beer...and should we have a beer or two more than we should...which rarely, if ever happens at my house...well then, maybe you might head home the next day in a bit of a grog...and say that were to happen and not all of your decoys made it home with you...well, I might be able to send them in the mail...but just in case I didn't make it to the post office...it should comfort you to know they were in good hands. Why were you coming again?

This has taken up a few hours to produce last month and get finished up this month.

Before last season started I finished up this guy. He doesn't look all to bad for a years wear and tear. Worked well but he looked lonely in the rig.

So a few friends were created to hang out in the rig with him.

Once I got them off the bench I could start working on some new patterns I wanted to try. Really looking forward to these ones. The first three will be swapped and then I want to put some more in the rig.

Mallards for my walk in bag this year. I am going to need to really hollow them out to make them light enough to replace the plastics. The bag currently holds two mallards and 3 woodies. These will be the two mallards looking for really content posses. Hope to get them cut out today.

Finally though the best thing on my bench recently was last night when I opened up the two boxes and took inventory of everything. Looking forward to working on those mallards with oils.

Brandon, Switchin' to oil??!!?? WOW, wish I had the guts to do that.

So please tell us why you decided to switch? Why those paints? Turp?

Help me...thanks. And nice deeks too.

Abe - I'd probably come despite all that. At my old age, I've been known to leave decoys behind.

Bob -Look forward to seeing you.

Brandon - Nice hoodies! You done good!!!

Those hoodies look great Brandon! Good luck with the oils, I'm sure that you will like them..........................Kevin

Hank - Happy Birthday! What a great wife to get her guy a gunning decoy for his birthday!! Put the first coat of spar varnish on the bottom this morning after church. Carved this redhead drake while waiting for it to dry. It's a white cedar body and white pine head. There is some Virgil Lashbrook influence in the head. There is also some Virgil Lashbrook influence in your widgeon. If it dries, I hope to get a second coat of spar varnish on it tonight. It's base coated and will get painted this week. Hope to ship it end of this week, early next...

Again, Happy Birthday and tell Jeanine I said hey! Pat

Kevin, that mallard is looking great!

Pat, at the rate you are going, you are going to have a lot of painting to do! Looks great.

Thanks Pat and Eric........................Pat, you have a regular decoy production shop there. Great work.....................Kevin

I've got this Redhead hen about 95% done. I have had some fun with her, I'm not sure if you can tell with the pic but her body is carved as if she is turning/twisting right.

Duane,

I have been using Jansen Acrylics for a while now and I really like them but I find myself adding so much extender and other mediums to them to get them to work the way I want and when I am done I am happy with the lines and color but it lacks the depth that oils have. I tried oils about a year ago and failed so I did a lot more reading and with that and the advice of many of the carvers here I am going for it again. This time cold turkey!

It really just boiled down to what I personally want for a look on the decoys and I could not find a reasonable way to get that out of acrylics and I also love the way oils age with time.

Thank everyone else glad you like the hoodies. The first GE got some work today and is all roughed out. I will take some pics later this week when I get back in town.
