August - Whats on your workbench?

Love the paint scheme on the ruddy Jode. And the curlew...awesome!
This one is literally on my workbench and in the process along with a couple of duck calls. Maybe I'll take a pic of the calls in a day or two and add them on here too.

Love the lines on the broadbill handle Steve. I hope you don't mind if I steal this idea for the handle on my estuary rebuild.

This is the final bird of the first phase of the eider rig, seen here going through my quality control department again.

Good morning, Tom~

Have at it - I look forward to your work!

I stopped by Red's boat yesterday - good thing I did. I can/should make my rail almost 3 inches longer.

All the best,

SJS

Bill, i noted with some glee, that the photo of the eider and youngster has a tuk-tuk antler leaning against the wall. Are you looking for another so you can rattle for them?
Not indigenous to ct., or have they been introduced?
BTW, spell check apparently doesn't have eider in its bank ;?)

Thanks Dave!

George, the caribou antler was from my time in Alaska. I found a shed, my wife one upped me and found an antlered skull which hangs in our entryway amongst my euro-mounted deer skulls.

Here is Georges latest work...you're a heck of a busy guy!

Beautiful work so far this month.
Bill, your Eider is my favorite so far. Beautiful!
This is my first Spoon. I tried to be fancy? Probably more than I am capable of? I'm not sure if I love it or hate it?

Good morning, Bob~

Great birds! (the details and primer make them look like E Allen birds....)

Do you have a goods source for decoy-size balsa?

All the best,

SJS

Bob, both of those are Wow birds! Very nice detail on the heads, especially the bills and eyes. Did you comb the heads? If not, how did you impart their texture?

I use National Balsawood for my wood they have decoy grade density balsawood R9 grade I don't like to hollow decoys. Balsawood decoys ride great and self right with less ballast .Fine grit rotary tools work best to shape it fast. Sanding bows make quick work to remove any tool marks . all and any raised wingtips or tails get a epoxy coat to add hardness to those areas.
I did use texture medium on the heads and scratch method with comb to add texture . You can get some nice texture effects results with combs, scratching, stiff brushes. and sponges in texture medium .

I've been working on that snipe, here are the "before" pictures. In a couple weeks when this paint has had a chance to cure a little bit, I'll beat it up. Shoot it. Rust the nail. Scratch it up. Make it look nice and old, or at least try to.

The nail and the dowel are not glued in, for easier transportation in the field. I couldn't decide which picture or two I liked best, hope y'all don't mind a flurry of them or it isn't considered rude!
