Bandsaw Problem

jon

What size bandsaw? 14" bandsaws really aren't stiff enough to tension a 3/4" blade. It sounds like you have other issues but an undertensioned blade probably won't cure the problem. 1/2" blades are about as big as I'd go on a 14" saw. More hp maybe?

Thank you to all. I will be working on my saw this weekend. Get back to you early next week. Thanks!!

or if the lock bar on one of the pulley wheels is gone.

MLBob,

A machinist you are not! I don't mean that in a bad way, just stating the obvious. :>) What the heck is a "lock bar" ???????? I had to read your entire reply before I figured out you were talking about the "drivekey" ;>) ;>)

It sounds like Jon has not owned this particular saw for very long and that he purchased it used. That is why I recommended he start at the motor and do a check on each component right on thru the whole saw. A good manual and parts list would be most helpful and I believe Sears usually has on-line versions available.

7" is a pretty good sized piece. I have had issues with the wood closing behind the blade and sticking the blade during big cuts as well. I use a wedge pushed into the cut line to ensure the blade doesn't become pinched and a sawdust trap.

Hehehehe..... So that''s what it's called. I can only admit to being a machinist wannabe.

Hey, at least lock bar was better than "little metal thingy" ....and enough to allow a real machinist to figure out what I was referring to.

Update:

Took apart and cleaned the entire saw till it was almost spotless. Hit each moving part with a bit of oil to maximize the motion created by the 1/2 horse motor.

1/2 inch blade with 6 TPI and I made some progress. The block is 15 inches long and 7 deep. I was cutting at about an inch per minute....very slowly. Didn't bother me one bit though. Enjoyed every minute of it!!

I am happy as a clam right now. Thanks for all the replies and advice.

Jon

Thanks for updating us, Jon.
Good to hear it's working better, but it should cut more easily then that. Try a 4TPI blade in 1/4" or smaller next time you buy a blade. I think you'll be very pleased.

My guess it is still a matter of the teeth clearing the saw dust. The space between the teeth fill up with saw dust and can't cut any more until they exit the wood and empty out. The small teeth just don't move a lot of dust very fast. I bought a 3 tpi blade, but haven't used is yet. But I don't go any finer than 4 tpi even for smaller stock.
