Bummer

Got ready to roll out the driveway this morning headed for the marsh. Truck battery was dead, crap, crap, crap. Waiting for my charger to bring it up to an acceptable charge level. Even then, I'm not sure I trust being able to restart again after sitting at the ramp for hours, unless I let it get a full charge now. Bummer when you take a day off work and can't hunt like you had planned.

Eww huck Dave. That sucks.

And I would tend to agree with your second guessing. Hard to have fun when you're worried like that.

Good luck getting it going!

Oh man, what a let down. I hope you were able to salvage the day and get out for some hunting.

FYI - I have a portable battery pack I keep charged for just such occasions. Bailed me out a few times. This will be my first year with my own duck boat and my motor is electric start so it'll be on board just in case.

Go get yourself a new battery pronto (I replaced the one in our SUV 6 weeks ago), as ya need one anyway. Cuz ya tend to worry about "Will it start" and that clouds your day outdoors. Those portable battery pack recharges are well worth the money. Off days that don't go as planned are indeed a Bummer.

Got the battery all charged and managed to get out for some hunting. I did not want to disturb other duck hunters with my late start, so I chased some squirrels instead. Picked off two of them with my 17HMR Savage rifle. My two grown daughters enjoy a good squirrel pot pie, so these might end up on the Thanksgiving table.

Squirrels (the Other White Meat) are DElicious, and are a regular staple at our home. I used to quarter them, now I slow roast them whole, plus they make great cacciatore. Glad you salvaged yer off day.

What did you shoot, greys, blacks or fox? Game pot pies are hearty meal.

Vince,

The squirrels I got today were both Fox squirrels. We have Fox, Grey and Red squirrels in this area. Given a choice, my preference is the Fox as they generally run larger in size than the others.

I bet the geese in your area breathed a sigh of relief.

Dave - We have greys, blacks and fox squirrels here. More greys & blacks, not like where I lived in PA. The fox squirrel is just becoming more common here. When I get the trifecta in one hunt with the .22, tis a special occasion. Greys and blacks are much more easier to skin after aging 5 days in the frig, than the fox. By then even the Fox is tender like butter.

Hope all goes well with yer "ticker". I've had that test more times than I can count... it has become a regular deal now.

Vince,

I skin mine right on the spot while they are still warm. Often it pays off as probably 30% of the time, I will stop the skinning process to shoot another squirrel that came out of hiding to watch me.

Dave - I gave that up many years ago, as I was not good at it. Way to much hair left on the meat for me to deal with, and I don't mind the added work days later. I use a small nylon cord bird strap to carry em, instead of a game bag. They cool quicker, and it holds 6 which is the limit. Tails make good jigs, streamers and caddis & alder flies.

Squirrels are very curious, especially after ya have shot one or two... Then I sit tight and wait.
