We're headed south on Wed so I'm in town packing and washing my shirt. I love being out at the lake pretending I'm retired, but it will be nice to be someplace where I can wear shorts and a t shirt with confidence that I won't freeze later in the day. The kids are vibrating with excitement to see their cousins and Grandparents. Meg keeps talking about making butter tarts with Grandma, and Mac wants to go catfishing with my dad. Anyways, here's a whole whack of pictures of what's being going on here in the last month or so.

Mac qualified to get his first ever small game lic. That means he can get a duck stamp and his own limit here and in Alaska. We've been dreaming of all the places we're going to hunt come Sept 1.

We had enough rainy days at the cabin for me to finally get a few decoys done. These GE's are for a friend of mine here in Whitehorse. I kinda hope I can talk him into some GHG plastics instead so I can keep these for myself.

I'm keeping this Barrows to add to my rig. I've got a hen and a rester drake to go with him.

The man scoters are headed back to the coast right now, so bachelor groups like this can be found on the larger lakes. We need a summer season!

Me and the kids were out in the boat when we saw this eagle fall out the sky and whack a fish. It was so cool! He had to "swim" back to shore with it because he couldn't lift it off the water.

Mike-

Congrats to Mac!!! I bet you guys are really excited. The pictures are great...love the scoters and of course your dekes are quite pretty. If ever you think they are ugly, shoot me a PM and I'll gladly take em off your hands.

Take it easy and enjoy the trip down south

Here's the fish he killed. It was a big lake whitefish, I guess about 3 lbs. We didn't mess around with it long and he went right back to it as we left.

I'm loving that new boat I'll tell ya. Not as much as Meg was loving her book though by the looks of it.

We decided to boat from Tagish to Carcross for ice cream a couple of days ago (1 hr boat ride one way) and found the route a little crowed. The same day a friend of mine encountered a momma moose with twins trying to outswim a grizzly on the lake and saved the little ones by "bumping" the bear with his boat, twice. I don't know if he had time to take any pictures. That's something I've never seen.

Carcross is a really small place (300 people maybe) that is where Bennet Lake narrows and becomes Nares Lake. Nares River itself is only about 400 yds long and that's the town. Lots of history from gold Rush days and river boat days and way back before that. Carcross is actually short for Caribou Crossing and you can imagine the excitement of hunting in a place like that when a migration was on. The gold rushers ate the 100,000 strong herd pretty much to extinction, but now 100 years later they are coming back well. By the time Mac is a man there may be a huntable population again.

This is exactly what I had in mind to build on the bow of the Gregor. I want a place for kids to get down out of the weather, and a wind shield for me. I'll look into the cost of fabricating out of aluminum in the winter. I can cut all the pieces and just pay a guy to weld them up for me I think.

Check out the custom seats in this bad boy!

If you had a boat like this, this close to the water, wouldn't you put it in the water?!

Docked at Carcross. That's Lake Bennett in the background.

Looking north from Bove Island on Windy Arm. Nares Lake in the background, Tagish Lake to the East. Windy Arm wasn't very windy that day. Our family tradition is to claim any and all new lands "discovered" for our clan. The first person to pee on the island gets it . Jenny beat Megan to this one.

We had a picnic of brie, iced tea, and cold roast specklebelly goose sammiches. Yummy!

And that's about it for now. Hope you enjoyed.

Dave, could have used you as a house sitter this summer. To get someone to stay here and look after the guinea pigs and two dogs we had to throw in use of the cabin, two kayaks, and the 14 ft'er with the 4 stroke 15hp on it! Times are tough.

The back is improving, thanks for asking. Sitting in the boat wasn't too uncomfortable at all. On the worst day in the last couple of weeks I took 6 pain killers, but that was 7 hours in the boat pike fishing with the kids. Yesterday and today I only took one. I'm trying this other medicine that isn't a narcotic that they use to stop epileptic seizures. Once I work up to a full dose they think it will replace the Percocet completely, except for unusual circumstances, like rough seas on a good day for divers. Another month and I should be able to start physio, and hopefully I'll be better than ever by this time next year. I think resting down south will be easier than staying here now that I'm feeling better. I have to admit I really enjoyed sitting on a stump, drinking coffee, "helping" Jane and Mac stack firewood today. I've found I have a lot more advice to give since I'm unable to do a full share these days. : )

Hey Dave, I got those bbills in the mail - gorgeous! Mac has them rigged and ready for Sept 1. Thanks for the great trade!

Hitch, come meet me in AK for a BGE shoot this winter and you can take a couple decoys home with you!

Great pic's as usual Mike, you guys are having way too much fun this summer. In the photo of you painting the GE, I see a Musk Ox horn mount above your hear. It looks neat where did you get it?

I'm with you on a small cuddy cabin on the new boat, especially where you live. A sudden squal comes up and at least you can keep your gear dry and the kids out of the blowing rain.

Of the bpats that I have owned over the years, my all-time favorite was my 17-1/2 foot Glaspar Seafair cabin cruiser. A great boat to sleep aboard and fish out of. With it's modest 100 hp Johnson engine it would do a top speed of 47 mph on calm waters. I used it mainly for weekend stays at various lakes, but I also used it for ocean fishing many times even going out past Santa Cruz Island for skipjack and yellowfin tuna when the waether and seas were good. A couple of times the wind would change and the waters would get rough and I would have to pull behind a bigger (45 footer) and ride his smooth wake back to the landing at a crawling slow 15 knots. But it beat getting my hull pounded by 6-8 foot seas all the way back in.

So you're heading down to the folks place for awhile so you can finally get your arms and legs tanned? I'm as brown as a berry and it's barely summer. A lot of work outdoors lately is the cause. Plenty more sun coming, supposed to be 102 Tuesday, 105 Wednesday and 100 on Thursday. It broke and all-time record over on teh coast today at Brookings, Oregon it was 100 there today! 80 miles north of there the high today was 57 degrees....CRAZY!

Tell Mac to keep up the practice with that compound bow, so he'll be a deadeye when it comes to usinmg it. It's neat that he'll be hunting with you this year with his very own license.......COOL!

Have fun and take lots of pic's!

Dave

Thanks for sharing your summer activiies. Glad to hear your back is allowing you all that activity. Your decoys are really something and I'm with Dani, any you aren't happy with send them this way. You are truly an artist.

Glad to hear you are up and around Dave. Don't over do it!

Mac set up a tree stand to shoot his deer down at the cabin. He hangs balloons on the vitals to make it more fun and he nails them pretty regularily from about 15 yds now that we put pins on that bow. Further out than that and his accuracy drops off fast.

I put a bipod on a .243 for Jane to take sheep hunting. I think she'll like it.

Thanks for the compliments guys, my pleasure to be able to share some pictures.

Jesse, Right now I'm planning to hunt Haines on the Sept long weekend opener for scoters and maybe some bottom fishing. As the season goes on, I might scoot down to Skagway for a shoot in Nov. Lots of GE's around there in the winter.

I believe that's a 1976 Starcraft Islander. Man those were sweet back in the day. I had a neighbor growing up that had one for sale when I was 19 or 20. He wanted $1600 boat, motor and trailer. $1600...16 million...didn't make a difference to me. At that age making $4.00 an hour that was more than I could put together at one time. I guess I can't get out of the 70's. It ironic that today I'm running a 1976 Starcraft!!!

Glad you're getting to enjoy your summer a bit. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
