Cabelas sold...maybe?

There are some reports coming out that employees are saying the deal with Bass Pro is a done deal. Sounds like some Cabelas stores will be closing.
Really Cabelas has been going downhill since they decided to become just another chain store. I'm sure they will say they can't compete with all the internet stores but the truth is their quality went down and prices stayed up. Even Walmart knows that you can only sell cheap stuff cheap.

I just read that as of Jan 1 2016 they will close ? I used to love Cabelas but going into there store here in New England definitely gave me that "Bargain Basement " feel to bad that had good stuff for years . I am not a huge fan of Bass Pro there clothing is not as good nor are there supplies . Good time for mom and pop shops to get on board and carry the gear we all need .

Spend the Cabelas points?!?!? I just ordered a scope that burnt quite a few, but I wonder?!?!?

I was thinking the same thing. I guess Deuce could use a couple things.

Spent my last two gift cards this week. Never have been thrilled with Basspro Redhead gear so I guess Mack's Prairie wings an txfowlers will be growing next year. Now Basspro and do to Cabelas what Cabelas did to Herters.

A Billings TV station reported today that our local Cabelas might be closing effective January 1 after the Bass Pro buyout. My impression, at least in our market, is that Scheels put them under. Scheels has more of an upmarket kind of feel, while the Cabelas started to look like a run down discount store with litter in the parking lot and a very tired looking exterior.

the cabelas branded stuff is so much better than the redhead brand.

That was true last time I bought something redhead, but that was twenty years ago. The cabelas stuff is nothing great these days.

I hope not. I hate redhead stuff. Everything I've ever bought redhead hasn't lasted, whether it be socks, pants, bags...I swear every time I get a basspro gift card, it takes me 6 months to use because I just can't trust most things there and its overpriced. Most everything cabelas branded has lasted way longer than it should have, minus the last pair of waders I got...but from what I've read a ton of folks have had issues with their waders the past few years.

I stopped in a Scheels while pheasant hunting in Iowa a few years ago. It did feel upscale. I really liked it though I was pressed for time.

I have been less than impressed with Cabelas since stopping in the one they opened in Noblesville, Indiana. I think they would have done better to keep their main brick and mortar stores, and sell via catalogs, yes, catalogs, and internet sales, as opposed to opening all of these satellite stores.

I think Rogers, Presleys, Macks PW, and a few others will quickly fill their void in the waterfowl world. Actually, I think they already have !

I don't see it as a big loss.......

Hard to believe Scheels myis having an effect. At least around here the Scheels selection and pricing is STUPID. I also highly doubt that there will be much of a void. I can't see how BP doesn't continue using the retail stores that are in place. Other than the Nebraska stores, they are all less than 20 years old, and in most places there is not a BP in that market. That Billings store is fairly new as well...

I haven't spent a dollar at Cabelas in several years. I can buy anything I need from either Amazon or Rogers at almost half the price of Cabelas and have it in 2-3 days max. They have pushed themselves right out by opening all these stores in a internet based shopping world today. Bass pro is smart if they have the capital to shut them down. But still a huge gamble if you ask me.

The funny thing is, Bass Pro is following the Cabelas model to some degree by opening up big stores. I have been to the Springfield store... One in Detroit/Rochester Hills (I think)... I know Des Moines has one...

I like the ability to actually go an try on waders or clothes with out having to spend a ton of money returning merchandise... That being said, I think they are saturating the market.

I (personally) haven't used Cabelas for hunting gear in a while. While I do like there fleeced lined casual pants, there hunting line has gotten cheap. And since I've become an avid water fowler, I believe Macks & Rogers blow them away in that department.
And another issue that turned me off years ago was Cabelas buying land & offering guided hunts. Just another thing of theirs that's grossly over priced.

Lately I find that the clothes they sell seem to be sized and designed poorly, arms tight, body baggy, and short, zippers are crap, etc.
most of this I blame on letting the chinese cheapen the products, instead of holding them to prior standards, but I guess the savings go back to cabelas too so we get to overpay for substandard junk.

When a xl guy can't get into a 2x garment, something is bad wrong.

I have found the same thing true about clothes fitting me however I tend to agree more with Fred in what he said. Secondly, I don't blame the Chinese because it was the American companies who left the US and it is their lack of quality control not the Chinese. It is evident that shoppers in our country wanted "cheap" and we got it. If there is anyone out there to blame, it is us. Amazing where the trail of GREED has left us, isn't it---
