Castoffs....

Needed to get a slab of that pecan cut for a luthier friend who's making a guitar for one of our boys (college graduation present) - He's covering the headstock + doing the rosette & inlays with the pecan - so I went to see another friend who runs a stockmaking operation and has a shop that makes me feel like I died & went to heaven.

We took the slab to one of his out-buildings that houses a Wood-Mizer with a lazer pointer that runs down 3 sides of the stock being cut (band on it was ONE -TPI !) . Darn thing runs on 25' rails! Wish I'd had my camera.

Also got a look at a bandsaw that takes a 17' 3" blade...... also in a buiding of its own away from the main shop. I gave him a nice call turned from "tiger stripe" hard-maple for his trouble; but in addition to leaving with an armload of striped maple "cutoffs" for calls, he also gave me a beautifully figured timber of English walnut that he told me had too many flaws to get a stock out of. He said: "If you don't take it, I'm just going to burn it.

Think I won't get some awesome looking call blanks out of this baby?:

Bob,

Nice chunk of wood you have there. There is a fine line between wood that has "character" and wood that has "flaws". Which makes one man's trash into another man's treasure. It is a good day, when you are on the receiving end of that equation.

I'll take a call out of that walnut please!!! :) That was a pretty good score! I am sure you will make some beautiful calls out of that! I have to say, I really admire your work. The birds you carve are extraordinary and your calls are excellent! One day, I will have one of each.

Excellent piece of "flawed" wood there Bob. I love your acrylic call and would like to certainly get a wooded call from that piece. Nice!!

Thanks for an interesting post but I have a question, if I may. What is that lathe looking tool?

Bob, I would like one of these calls when you get a chance. Just let me know how much and where to send the check.

Boz-

Jet Mini lathe. Got it for my sons when they were younger because having them use the full-sized one made me nervous. Unless you're going to do large spindles (table legs, etc), or turn good sized bowls, it's a good piece of machinery for the casual turner. I do all my calls on it.

Go here to get details:

You can probably find one for less than that.

That's a beautiful piece of wood Bob! I hear there is a little history there to go along with it too. WOW! Hitch

Thanks Bob. It looks like a neat rig. I have a regular size lathe and wonder do you use regular size tools with that. Probably a dumb question but have never seen that size before.

do you use regular size tools with that.

Tool rest is shorter, but I do use all the tools & accesories I used on the full sized lathe, including a full-size 4 jaw chuck, a collet system, live centers, etc.
As long as the thread count and morse taper match, all that equipment can be used with the smaller lathe.

I can hardly wait to see the pics of the duck calls that you produce from those pieces of wood. They sure look like a carver's dream.

Got this in the mail this morning, it felt like Christmas all over again!

This thing is absolutely beautiful and blows nicer than any commercial call I've ever blown! A real dandy!

Thanks again Bob, this surely will not be the last call I get from you!

Here's a video of what the call sounds like, and I just got it this morning! This thing is very ducky!!!

Glad you like it, Derek. I'd say you're ability as a caller has a bit to do with making it sound good too.

.........Oh, oh........does this mean I now have to come up with catchy names for individual calls ( ie: "the wicked walnut, armegeddonizing, paralyzing, dealer of duck-death "), paint my dog's face, and then designate a "Pro-staff" ??
